Wow, Orions #2300,2302,2330,2375 were previously at Academy.

Also, 2272, 2288, 2330 were sitting at South Holland, and 2273, 2287, and 2318 were MIA from DuPage County.

Apparently none of the above was as dead as indicated, or since anything over 2000 is accessible and could be run, the Pace bus shortage isn't as bad as thought, or more likely, Highland Park must be REALLY paying Pace for this "revenue service."

Notwithstanding that, the aforementioned politicians probably want the 36 buses (28 you list and 8 2600s, used for this service as well as for 471-473) replaced with hybrids, pronto.

Also Pace had mentioned in the budget that revenue was down because the concerts weren't any good. There was criticism of the CSO conductor in the Sun-Times on Thursday.

Putting this all together, the only thing that makes sense is we now know where the excess Schaumburg trolleys went after it was cut back to 3 days.

What exactly is Pace service in Ravinia Park? Is it regular service with route numbers or just a once in a while shuttle for concerts?

In actuality the latter, although on some reports it is reported as route 475 or 476. Not on the Pace route finder.

Basically it is to get people from the downtown parking lots to Ravinia (and back).

Shuttle service from Highland Park Metra to Ravinia which is used for parking. Dest signs says "SHUTTLE". Runs 1 hour before and after large venues.

Those are some of the buses I saw during my trip to S. Holland. I remember 2318, it was a spare in Naperville for one of their feeder routes. And 2287/2288 used to be in Lisle before Nabis replaced them. Pace must be making a killing from Highland Park. I wonder what they do with those buses during off-season?

... I wonder what they do with those buses during off-season?

It appears that they sit either at South Holland or in the McHenry facility. There were a previous discussion whether they are off the roster, in that they don't show up in the budget,* but a driver said they are on the roster so long as they have a license plate and inspection certificate.

____________

*With jesi's list, I can account for all 21 of the 2272 series, although the 2009 budget says 11 are in the active fleet. Of course, any Orion older than that is definitely not listed in the budget. Based on that count, the Westmont ones must be off the budget.

2272, 2273, 2287, 2288--on the list

2274-2276, 2283, 2286, 2291--Westmont/Lisle

2277-2282, 2284, 2285--North Shore

2289, 2290--Academy

2378-Northwest

2274 has showng up at North Shore on webwatch in the last month. 2277 & 2279 have not shown up recently on Webwatch. Last time I was at Westmont there were 3 Orion's visible which I believed were 2283/6/91 (I took a photo of 2286).

The last I physically saw 2274 was on the run at the south side of the Lisle station (route 820). Doesn't negate the possibility of a swap, but...

As far as stuff not showing up recently on Webwatch, that probably isn't definitive. I seem to recently have physically seen the two buses you mention around Glenview, but couldn't give you the date. For that matter, I have rarely seen more than one 2390 on a North Shore route (out of 7) on Webwatch, nor at least 1 of the two NS buses that actually are on 423. Not sure what that means.

I did some searching on Webwatch today around 4:30pm. So far, I have these 1993 Orions accounted for:

40 footers: 2301, 2303, 2315, 2319, 2324, 2326, 2328, 2332, 2336, 2338, 2339, 2340, 2351, 2352, 2353, 2355, 2364, 2363, 2365, 2368, 2371, 2372, 2369

35-footers: 2378, 2277, 2278, 2280, 2281, 2282, 2284, 2285, 2289.

These buses are either at north shore or NW. That accounts for 31 buses total SO FAR. There are probably more, but not everybody was showing up on Webwatch at the time I looked at it. I can tell you 2277 is at Westmont, that's why it isn't showing on Webwatch because those Lisle routes don't work on Webwatch. I'll update as I see more.

Buses #2301, #2326, #2372, #2289 are at Academy Coach and also you can add #2293, #2374 and 35ft #2290 to this list. These are the only seven active Orion buses left at Academy.

You have a lot of North Shore ones to go. I can at least think of 2341, 2345, 2348, 2349, and 2350.

2347 and 2370 pretty consistently show up at NW.

There was also the previous observation that 2297 shows up on Webwatch in Waukegan on school runs.

2292 and 2316 have been seen in Naperville.

But others say that some of the ones I saw (and in the Naperville, NW and NS cases physically) have moved.

Considering jesi's lists, the only ones I am convinced are completely dead are the previous listed: 2308, 2309, 2322, 2329, 2331, 2342, 2361, 2373, 2376, plus add to the list based on reports here 2325 and 2307. That would be 11 40-footers. jesi's list would put another 5 40-footers at least off the budget. That accounts for 16, which does get us to 70 of 86.*

___________

*Updated. I made a mistake regarding the number between and including 2292 to 2377.

I'm sure there are others out there, those were the ones that showed up on Webwatch at that time. Given Webwatch doesn't completely show all the routes, there's probably more. I know route 565 never shows up in Gurnee and I believe that's one of North Shore's heaviest routes. Also at the time I looked at it, some of the Glenview and surrounding area Metra feeder buses had not shown up. I definitely remember seeing 2350 on Webwatch sometimes. Maybe they weren't running at that time. I remember 2316 in Naperville too, but I didn't know if it's still there. And there are at least 5 35-foot Orions at Westmont that I haven't accounted for. I live close to there, I'm gonna check it tomorrow and update what buses are still active there.

Checked it out tonight. On the list of Ravinia buses (future junk) I saw:

2430, 2437, 2442, 2446

6016 (presumably; Soldier Field wrap) 6018, 6020, 6022 (big buses for this in a previously Orion VI free zone)

6653-6656 (all except 6655 with the blue wrap; 6655 in the no yellow stripe and small wrench format). Now we know where the original South 6600s went, when it got the NS 6600s,

Since I was going to downtown Chicago today, I couldn't resist a side trip on the UPN to Highland Park after reading your post last night. I never expected to see Pace 2400s running again, and I even snuck in a ride on one. Here is the list of buses I saw:

2425, 2430, 2434, 2438, 2442, 2446

6020, 6029*

6619, 6658, 6678

*This bus had a Soldier Field Express wrap, so maybe this is the one you saw.

There were probably more that I didn't see.

Destination signs on 6000s and 6600s said "Ravinia Festival". On 2400s, they flipped between "Ravinia" and "Festival". The run boxes didn't have an obvious number scheme. The 2400s seemed to display the fleet number, but 6619 showed "40" and 6658 showed "209". I wonder if the drivers just entered a random number to get them to work.

Pictures, in the order they were taken.

2438 unloading at Ravinia Festival. Somehow, no one thought it was suspicious that I got off the bus, took a picture of it, and immediately walked to the exit. Three Highland Park cops and several Ravinia employees saw me do that and none of them had any visible reaction.

image.jpg

6658 deadheading back north after dropping off at Ravinia.

image.jpg

2446 leaving the Ravinia Metra stop. The driver looked at me apparently wondering why I was taking pictures.

image.jpg

6678 about to arrive at Ravinia Metra.

At this point I realized an outbound Metra was coming, so I rode it back to the Highland Park station, eluding any police who may have been getting calls about a suspicious guy taking pictures of buses.

The one thing I found out trailing 6656 was that the assembly point is a parking lot behind HPHS off St.John's. but about a half mile north of Elm.

The main difference on what I might not have seen is that I only scoped out between HPHS and the parking lot at the Ravinia station. From experience, I did not want to get stuck in the traffic jam  usually south of there.

Apparently due to the closer dot pitch on the later buses.

Definitely worth taking pictures. So wth, they still have #6600's that are not wrapped? I wonder what garage got to drive the #2400's, North? That must have been a nice trip riding/driving something that's retired. Maybe no cops said nothing because they were bus fans too!! xD I can relate to your concern as I take alot of pictures myself. Seriously, if anyone said anything to me I'd tell them I was taking pictures of the vintage buses. It's like a time warp up there!!
