I'll be keeping track of the #5000 cars with LED lighting in this thread if anyone's interested. So far it just seems like it's the six cars.

You can add #5003-04 and #5031-32 to the cars with led lighting. It's on the pink line.

I added 14 cars to the led lighting equipped #5000's list above. New cars are #5001-02, #5011-12, #5059-60, #5097-98, #5107-10, and #5141-42. I also changed around a few cars on the #5000 roster. Seeing as cars are being retrofitted out of 54th and Harlem shop, I wonder if the red line cars might be swapping with the green and pink lines or will the retrofit happen out of howard shops or skokie shops. .

Cars 5001-5004 (Artics) were set up for conductor to work very differently depending on whether it was a single car or a multi-car train. ON two or more cars, conductor would work doors from two-lever controls in motor cabs in middle of train, one lever for all doors to left, a second for all doors to the right (like a 6201-6470, basically). However, they were specifically designed for pay-on-train when in single-car service. Conductor would have worked doors from a pair of "stands" in the middle vestibule, from which he could see inside both end section doors. There were THREE levers in these stands, a left one operating end section door to the left, a right one operating end section door to the right, and a center one operating door directly in front, in the center section. Approaching a station, conductor would look both ways inside to see if anyone was getting off in either end section, and if so open that section's door. In addition he would open the door in front of him, which would be the one any entering passengers would have to use. They would then pay as the passed the conductor, like on a streetcar. After everyone was on, conductor would close his doors and train would go. Actually this was a VERY good plan in an era when riding, particularly on the West Side L, was down off-peak to the point that there was single-car operation on Sundays. Whether this system was ever officially used is doubtful, however the middle section door controls had to have been used in the early years, as there are shots of single cars in service on Garfield and Evanston, and there would not have been any other way to operate the doors. Later, when the cars ended up on Ravenswood, they were used strictly as end cars because of their door operation limitations. For Skokie, the motorcab door controls were rewired for one lever to control all doors on one side, the other all doors on the other side.

Added another 16 cars to the led car lighting list. They are #5017-18. #5027-28. #5047-48, #5065-66, #5075-76, #5081-82, #5085-86, #5143-44. So counting all #5000's we have 54 led equipped lighting cars.

Yes it seems to be difficult to keep the Pink and Green allocated cars straight! They seem to switch between lines on a regular basis

The news reports when they were repairing the welds was that all are serviced at the Lake shop.

When a conductor was working outside between cars on early 6000's, you just looked one way and then the other and then closed the doors, first the ones towards the rear of the train, then the ones towards the front. In that era people were expected to be smart enough not to do stupid things like try to jump out as the doors were closing, though if they did, there were sensitive edges on the doors that would then reopen and try to reclose the door. (I worked New York R-10's with outside door controls ca 1982, so this is first hand experience!)

Chalk up another 12 cars on the led #5000's. (#5007-08, #5013-14, #5043-44, #5083-84, #5117-18, #5139-40) That makes 60 cars finished out of 148 #5000's on the green and pink lines

(message Feb 10th)

Another 8 cars are added to the led interior lights in #5000 list. #5057-58, #5079-80, #5105-06 and #5137-38. That should make 68 cars finished out of 148 on the pink and green lines.

Other notable changes to the #5000 series
Starting early 1/14, #5000 cars have an added chime/beep added to the interior doorways of opened passenger doors to assist for the blind. The cars are so quiet, the blind don't know where the doors are. The first cars that have this are #5157-60, #5329-30 AFAIK.

Starting late 12/13, #5000 cars have started to be retrofitted with LED interior lighting.
So far Green/Pink line cars #5001- #5146 have been done, finishing on March 9th, 2014.
Starting Mar 9th, 2014, the Red/Yellow line line cars have began to be retrofitted with LED lights
Those cars #5147- #5368 were completed at the end of May 2014.
All #5000 cars #5369-70 and higher are coming with the LED lighting
factory installed, so they don't need retrofitting.

Pink line #5000 service goes from 4 car operation to 6 car operation starting the week of 12/12/11, due to repeated dead spotting at tower 18. Pink line began testing 4 car trains again in July 2012 and on 8/26/12 the Pink line went back to 4 cars. Green line also debuts with 6 car only trains. Green line trains changed to 4 car operations in the non peak periods
(nights and weekends) on 9/18/12.
Cars previously outfitted with amber signage (#5001-02, #5013-86, #5089-94, #5103-14)
begin to receive there color LED signs in late August 2012. All cars (#5001-#5112) have received these signs.
Cars were withdrawn from service 12/15/2011 due to cracks. 52 cars had been received by that point. (44 in revenue service) Previously received cars were retrofitted with new parts starting in March 2012. New car deliveries began arriving again in April 2012. Cars went back into service 5/4/2012. There should be 12-24 new cars delivered each month.
Starting with cars #5269-70, (and higher) these cars have a blue interior versus a tan one.

They are #5009-10, #5045-46, #5051-54, #5069-70, #5091-92, #5095-96, #5115-16, #5119-20. #5127-28 and #5135-36 which adds up to 90 cars finished on the Pink and Green lines. Only 58 cars are left to complete and then they will be done with the Pink and Green line

Yeah i think they are close to finished there. I haven't seen any of the old lighting since last week.

That was pretty much confirmed today with my visit to the Green and Pink lines. I didn't see any cars with the old lighting. I added #5019-20, #5033-34, #5039-40, #5057-58, #5061-62, #5065-66, #5071-72, #5077-78, #5087-88, #5089-90, #5093-94, #5103-04, #5111-12, #5123-24, #5129-32 and #5145-46 to the LED lighting list. The remaining cars (20 of them, #5005-06, #5015-16, #5021-22, #5025-26, #5029-30, #5035-36, #5041-42, #5049-50, #5125-26, #5133-34) I'm assuming were most likely held in as the final cars being fixed up. Now it's time to work on the Red line

Update: by mar 7th, they were down to 10 cars left. Final cars left are #5015-16, #5021-22, #5035-36, #5049-50 and #5133-34.

Final Green/Pink line update: All Green/Pink cars finished by Mar 9th. (#5001 - #5146)

Well BusHunter, the retrofitting of the lighting has now infiltrated the Red Line 5000s. #5245-45 and #5337-38 are on the list. However, they're not the only ones that are retrofitted.

Yeah I know, #5147-48 was the first one that I know of from the pre #5369-70 cars to be retrofitted last weekend. I guess it's time to start another list.

They are really working fast on these red line #5000 LED interior installations. Out of 224 cars my list says they have finished over half of them or 114 cars and that's in only 40 days from March 9th. At this rate looks like they'll be done easy by the end of May. Cars completed so far are:

#5147-50, #5153-54, #5157-58, #5163-64, #5167-68, #5171-76, #5179-#5200, #5207-08, #5215-20, #5223-24, #5229-30, #5245-46, #5251-52, #5257-64, #5269-72, #5279-80, #5283-88, #5291-92, #5295-96, #5299-#5306, #5311-20, #5325-26, #5329-30, #5337-38, #5351-54, #5357-60, #5365-66

Looks like they are just about done with these LED interior light installations on #5000's. There's only 22 cars left on my list that needs to get done they are #5165-66, #5201-02, #5241-44, #5255-56, #5309-10, #5339-40, #5345-50, #5363-64 and those can probably be held in now, so I don't expect to see the older lighting anymore on in service trains.
