2600-series - Updates & Retirements

#2941-42 I was told did go to the Orange so they are not LTH's. One would think when 200 cars do go to the scrapper they'll be mostly #2600 and #2700 series. I've been noticing some of the low #2600's are disappearing.

what a coincidence... I am on 2942 right now on the orange line. Still has red/purple/yellow maps inside.

I don't think they have enough cars left on the line to run an 8-car train. Last count I heard was 10, but I've heard of at least two transfers since then.

BusHunter has them down to a solid 8 at last roster update that I checked last night/early morning. So, barring mechanical difficulties they have 8 operable cars in

2705-2706,2785-2786,2891-2892 and 2955-2956

I just received word that the last 8 #2600's on the Red line mentioned above have went to the Blue line so no more #2600's exist on the Red line. #2931-32 has also made an appearance on the blue line, so they are no longer LTH's.

Second day of TV traffic reports of "mechanical problems on the Blue Line." Think there is any connection?

The newest car is 18 1/2 years old. At least before when they had the #2200's something was pretty new. This is almost like having a full fleet of them. But they should have about a 70 car spare ratio on top of the old ratio (might be about 100 total) which is high, mostly likely due to having all 18 year old cars on a 24 hour line. But even though they might have a rotating fleet, the cars will still fail due to age. That was the problem with #2489-90 the other day. Ultimately, the cars need more attention than the new ones. I'd adjust the car repairmen to give the blue line a higher percentage. What do they need them  on the Red line for, to twiddle their thumbs? The #5000's should mostly be repair free for the first 3 years.

Here's an odd catch by @Zol87 back in March 2015: a Brown Line consist of what looks to be entirely #2600's... Possible result of a Brownage run??

It has a Loop destination sign*, when the sign should have been changed before entering the Loop, If a Brownage, it should say Kimball according to the timetable. I'm not sure what it is, but Zol might know.

___________

*I clicked the picture, and then the magnifying glass in Flickr. Also, Green Red marker lights would indicate Brown Line.

It could be either a Ravenston or a Browange.  I used to see the Ravens tons run with 200 because it originated from Howard Yard.   In either case,  the operator should have changed signs upon leaving the Mart, but sometimes operators forget.

But then it would normally have an Orange or Purple Loop sign.

In the morning rush, the Ravenston comes in as a Brown Line,  hence the Loop sign.  He then changes the sign to a Brown Belmont sign.  I don't know whether he changes to a Purple Howard sign at Mdse Mart or Belmont, though the latter would be my guess.

In the case of a Brownage,  the train would have a Brown Loop sign  to Library,  then change to Orange and proceed south on Wabash.

Based on the date,  I would guess Ravenston as the Orange Line had 2400s.

I'd guess the opposite, that the sign is changed from Belmont to Howard at Mart. That way the people waiting between Mart and Wellington know that the train is actually going to Howard so they don't have to wait for the next one. Otherwise, the only people on board during the express segment would be those who boarded at Belmont.

I was on the Purple Line Express in the morning about a week ago and I saw some trains going southbound with Midway signs, north of the Mart. What you described would make more sense though. Maybe I just happened to see operators not following procedure, or stuck signs.

So depending on how one counts 3458, 77 down, 523 still around.

1494 cars total.

It will be interesting to see what happens to 3457 after 3458 is retired. Right now, 3351-3352 and 3435-3436 are still OOS after the incidents. If one of the two cars in the pair(s) are not salvageable, then 3457 can be remarried to one of them. Otherwise, I wonder what might happen with 3457. I don't think 3458 will get a rebuilt traction motor and LED signage and lighting because the car right now is 32 years old.
