Looks like a retired 2600 has found a home in the new Bulls/Hawks store at the United Center. Can't tell the actual number because they replaced it with 555

Might be authentic, but might not be, since it is only the section between the doors.

My guess if it is an actual fragment of a 2600, it might be part of the O'Hare Station crash when the Rail Operator fell asleep... I know 3061 was cut into pieces and hauled away, but what about it's mate, 3062? It might've been a bit roughed up in the wreckage as it traveled beyond the stopping point to the escalator, but it might've been intact enough at the tail end from 3061 to be reused in this capacity.

I forgot to credit the article this photo appeared in:

Can't wait to see it in person.

I thought about that, but it looks way too detailed to be a reproduction. If you look closely at the door, it has the section of rubber edging that was installed later. Also, the peeling don't cross between cars sticker seems like something they wouldn't have put on a reproduction.

WGN TV story refers to "a refurbished CTA train car," so it must be something like the car placed on the apartment building balcony.

There are 2600s that are "work motors" and yes the hoppers are used to carry ballast. Often ballast is loaded on a siding in Evanston. That would be where the train might be headed.

DH

DH, the Evanston sidetrack ( or is it team track?) at South Boulevard, has not been used in years for ballast.  Howard yard is used, the area between the Evanston tracks, right now there is a front end loader there.

Somebody here on ChiTransit was imploring for 3199-3200 to be the preserved train cars.

Here's your chance, bunky. Buy them now. Try to sell them to IRM or RELIC. :)

Car 2753 sold to 555 International Inc 3/9/17. Butchered a bit, to be sure, but all the pieces are real.

I'm surprised someone from the manufacturer or historian doesnt want those. #3199-#3200 was the last to run on the assembly line there. They do have a historical significance.

Except it's either Budd, which is out of existence, or Bombardier as successor to Budd, which at the moment doesn't want to acknowledge that CTA didn't honor its protest.

With manufacturing plants coming and going, not much for anyone to commemorate.

Yeah but there is someone out there who is probably interested at least more than any other car that's retired.

The question then essentially comes down to who has the bucks in 2023 or 2024, or whether CTA has earned enough from ctagifts.com to squirrel them away as it did with the 8 2400s.

Similar issue to since Morrison Kundsen is long out of business, whether anyone will be interested enough to pay for 3200s in 2026.

The 18 cars listed above have not been sold for scrap as of yet, but they do appear to be AFR'd. Most were seen in work (deicer) service. If they are officially work cars, they would not appear in the passenger roster, but would still be around.

Why not the #2400's worked the mainline when they were work cars.

2401-2422 (later 2424) were always listed as passenger stock. They were transferred to account 532 (work equipment) until the other 2400's went out of service and are no longer on the passenger register. These 18 were apparently transferred to 532 recently. However, it is very difficult to be certain of their status as CTA's getting very messy on keeping track of their vehicles in recent years. They have lost a few recently they have no ide where they are, or aren't, such as the 900-series buses. Paperwork says sold, storeroom says still at SS.

Besides, the whole purpose of the rehabbing of those 100 2600s is to extend their lives and modernize them a bit in the meantime that the 7000s will come and replace them.

If one accepts the logic that the Blue Line will be the last to get 7000s, and thus is getting 3200s, that's not a relevant consideration. The 100 rehabs will probably stay on the Blue Line and already have Blue Line roll signs.

The issue is the maybe 160 cars that do not have Orange/Brown signs.

I didn’t get a look at the number but you might be correct sir

Yes. That is it. that is 3458 ex-3032. That was renumber because on March 15, 1988, Car 3031 derailed at Wilson Station. 3032 was Renumber to 3458 and was coupled to 3457.

Here is a image of it

I think this car was rehabbed with LED Signs.
