The only issue I have with it is that it says Chicago was able to save streetcars because they had rights of way. That does not appear to be correct. The streetcar companies went bankrupt around 1927, but hung around in receivership until 1947 when CTA took them over. However, they couldn't maintain their systems because fares were frozen at 7 cents and they had responsibilities to maintain the streets as part of their franchises, same as the other systems. CTA killed the streetcars for the reasons most other places did--they could not be economically operated due to traffic congestion.I've noted before that the Roger Rabbit theory didn't work in Chicago, because CTA eliminated the streetcar system without GM's intervention.
