westing
According to TwinCities.com the new Hiawatha light rail line in Minneapolis, MN has consumed a great deal of the budget. So much so, it seems bus service could be sacrificed to prevent cut backs on light rail. It seems, in this case, there are other factors besides a brand new light rail line. Ridership was down; a bus strike delayed the opening of the Hiawatha line and prevented buses from running for a few weeks. "A system of more than 100 routes and more than 900 vehicles is being sacrificed for one route with 24 vehicles." This brings up the question: is it wise to cut poor bus runs and lines just to fund a light rail line? Personally, I think a good mix of buses and trains is needed. With fewer buses there are fewer options to commute home from a station, ultimately hurting rail service. With less trains, a bus could always supplement the line in off-peak hours, like the 62N runs in place of the Orange line at night. What does everyone else think?
