Hi I would like to know just how a metra engineer knows when to move the train after the conductors give the highball sing if the engineer is seated on the opposite side of the platform where the conductors are standing? Please let me know thank you.

Speaking for Metra owned districts, the engineer can move the train only after

receiving a signal (via internal buzzer) from the person working the doors and

getting a door light indication (that the doors have all closed) in the cab or engine.

From what I know about the Union Pacific operated lines, they only use

the door light indication in the cab/engine, and do not get a manual signal

from the crew.

I don't know how the BNSF works.

I thought that rule changed after the Rachel Barton incident?

The door light in the cab rule is because of the Rachel Barton incident. The person

in charge of the doors is responsible for making sure all the doors are closed before

he/she closes his door. When they close their door, that will activate the door light

in the cab and permit the engineer to proceed.
