Buses with numbers on top....

I think its cool that CTA and Pace buses are now displaying their fleet numbers on the roofs. This is a practice thats been applied to other city buses around the country for many years. The first CTA buses displaying their numbers on the roof began back in 1995 for the Democrap Convention. You can spot the bus numbers from a high building or an airplane. CTAs exSeattle artics displayed their old Seattle numbers on the roofs.

CTA had roof mounted numbers for sometime now. Just not on every bus.

The NABI artics were the first buses to arrive with the fleet numbers already placed on top. The New Flyers have them in place as well. All previous buses had the numbers applied. Some, not all the TMCs have them as well as some of the 5300 Flxs . Each of the rehabbed 6000s will have the number placed on top upon completion, a few MAN Americanas had them. All the 5800s had them applied for the 1995 Convention. Flyers D901s didnt get them nor did the CTA MAN artics. My brother is an experienced pilot and weve taken many excursions over Chicago. The one thing I look for when Im flying over the city are the CTA buses andtheir numbers. I make sure I take along my binoculars. Pace also is placing their bus numbers on the roofs as well. The Orion low floors were the first buses to arrive with the numbers on top and I believe most if not all of the old Orions have them too. All subsequent Pace bus deliveries have the numbers already placed.

But what about 6400s Nova LFs, how come none of those has the numbers on top?

The numbers on top of the Novas probably arent placed because of the limited amount of space. There really isnt room up on top to place the number unless the number was placed laterally behind the a/c unit. Even then it probably wouldnt look good. Pace 22/2300s have the number placed on the forward part of the bus, laterally across.

When I fly into Los Angeles the numbers on their MTA buses are so big theyre readable from the air, of course when youre almost landing. But theyre pretty legible from up high. Over the summer I went to L.A. and during landing I remember looking out the window, the first thing I look for are the MTA buses and sure enough as luck would have it I remember spotting "5180" and "5145" which are New Flyer high floors for the LAMTA. Very interesting to see this.

Minneapolis is very interesting because not only they place the number on top but they also display the "T" symbol as well.

Do you know, does L.A. MTA still has 1992-93 TMC RTSes?? Did you see the 1992 MCI/ 1995 Nova Classics running from Santa Monica "Big Blue Bus"? It looks really nice in all blue color.

Yes, there are still many RTSs on the property. I recall seeing MTA RTS #1999 and #1997 and some 1400s. I did see the Classics from Santa Monica and the MTA and S.M. NABIs as well. I was sightseeing one evening on Hollywood Blvd. And I went to the top of the Kodak Theater looking down on Hollywood Blvd. you can see all the MTA buses as they go by and see each bus number on top. The MTA Nabis have a large a/c unit on the roof, the roof number is placed on the a/c unit itself. Along Hollywood Blvd. you see lots of MTA model buses including the Metro Rapid buses, New Flyers, Neoplans, and TMCs. It s awesome to see every bus go by and spot the roof number. And whats really cool is that the RTSs and New Flyer high floors have very large numbers printed on top because of their unobstructed roofs compared to their NABI counterparts which have much smaller numbers on top. But overall its fun to see this.
