trainman8119
Could someone please explain to me why (how) a garage would have heavier am or pm rush service. ie why would a garage like Archer have a heaver am load than pm. There are no more routes running in the pm rush than am rush, so that is not it. I don't believe school trippers are that much more in the am than pm (or at least it shouldn't). Why would there have to be a big garage shuffle based on am/pm run loads ??? So what gives, I am really lost on this.
rmadisonwi
Actually, school trippers are part of the reason (depending on the garage), but they are generally more of a reason for the PM rush. Garages that are AM heavy tend to have routes with very intense AM peaks (such as the various Lake Shore Drive expresses, both north and south), but not quite so bad PM peaks. As one extreme example of this, one could take a look at the #134 schedule, which has a three-minute headway in the AM rush (with often full artics), and a 10-minute headway in the PM rush (and a comfortably loaded mix of standards and artics). PM-heavy garages (such as Archer and 74th) tend not to do a lot of downtown routes (for Archer, it would be the 62 and 129, for 74th, none). Therefore, the routes wouldn't be subjected to as intense of an AM peak, have a lower peak-to-base ratio, and would have ridership (and service) steadily building up later in the day.
