Buslover88
Did anybody hear about the Accident Today at Harlem in Elmwood Park? 16 People were Injured. No one was Killed. My question is, how did it happen? I know the Train Crashed, but what caused the Accident?
Kevin
It would appear that either traffic was backed up onto the tracks or there may have been a signal failure.
trainman8119
It wouldn't have been a signal failure, but a gate malfunction. At this time it appears that the gates were working and that cars were caught on the tracks with traffic backing up from a stoplight about 1/2 block east of the crossing. The train apparently hit 5 cars and created a chain reaction that involved another 7 or 8. All train related signals were working properly. The train involved would have been travelling around 70mph and comes around a bend in the track as it passes 75th ave and through the Elmwood Park station. Reaction time for the engineer, I would estimate about 10 seconds, maybe less. Stopping distance with 6 cars in emergency...1/2 mile.
