Archer Garage memories....last call....

Before Beverly in 1949, there was a proposal to build a garage at South Chicago and 93rd. Again never happened, but CSL owned land there for a long time. CTA sold it in 1970s.

Strangest one of all was the story of 52nd. CCRy in 1920s owned entire block 52nd to 53rd alley to Cottage Grove. Sold north half to Chicago Motor Coach about 1924, south half stayed with CCRy, later CTA until 1990s but was leased out for decades. After 1952 CTA again owned entire block.

In fact if one goes thru the CSL bankruptcy records, it is amazing how much property CSL had that was not used for transit purposes, including a few rental residential houses where at some point something was planned but not followed thru with.

CTA has sort have been the opposite since then. There was the stink over the deal to sell Limits and North/Cicero together, and even complaints that it didn't sell a turnaround at Lincoln-Peterson before it did. Now, it is picking up valueless properties for turnarounds (Burnside, Central-Roosevelt), and this discussion started with CTA not picking up Fisk, so it will eventually have to buy something else.

On the other hand, the sale of Archer seems to have gone fairly smoothly.
