A spur off the Purple line at South Blvd.

It runs off the northbound tracks and down the embankment. What was it used for?
Various books on the history of the Chicago Rapid Transit indicate that it had a freight business, acting as a contract carrier to deliver to, for instance, coal yards along the route. Also, the North Shore Railroad had trackage rights over that section. One can't guarantee that that was the purpose of the particular spur, but track maps in Chicago's Rapid Transit (CERA Bulletin #115, © 1976) , show a 1975 spur northbound from the east track at South Blvd. In addition, a 1911 track map shows a coal yard at Noyes St., but that would have predated the tracks being elevated.
