Fleet Numbers

With the Comcast ads on the bike racks covering the fleet numbers on the front of the buses, apparently there are those who feel like some of us, that hiding that number is not a good thing. I have noticed a number of buses out of 77 that are having their numbers put behind the steering column under the steering wheel, about where the number is on the bus body so that it could be determined from the front of the bus what the number is. I have noticed this on a number of Novas as well as some New Flyers. About a month or so ago I saw a Nova with the number actually scribbled out in marker on the actual Comcast ad. Shortly after that I have been seeing these numbers popping up on the steering column.

Definitely a better idea than what Pace does with those teeny tiny numbers under the run box of the Orion VIs.

I had also noted the ones written on the Comcast ads on 77th buses.

With the low floors, there doesn't seem to be enough room on the fronts for the fleet numbers. The only ones that seem to come close are the Pace NABIs, and many of them (the 2400s and blue ones) have it near the front door.

It looks like Pace has completely given up putting them on the front of the 2600s.

With the bike racks, the front license plates on some buses are no longer visible (of slightly more relevance on Pace buses with plates that correspond to the fleet number). Of course the value of Illinois license plates (with 6 or 7 numbers squished) for vehicle identification purposes is marginal anyway.

I also get a laugh out of what looks like hardware store house number stickers being put over ad wraps.

Kedzie had this done with bus 1128 some months ago. As a matter of fact, it was the first bus in the whole fleet for which I've seen this done. I remember a few TMCs would have their bus numbers applied to the front windshield when they had ad wraps applied to the full body of the bus, but 1128 was the first time I saw the bus number applied behind the steering column. I mentioned to CTA a few months ago that the Comcast ads were a bad idea because of the fact that they blocked the bus numbers while finishing one of the Mystery Shopper surveys. I actually got a response thanking me for my input about bike rack ads. So I suppose this is one of the alternatives to removing the ads as they already did with a few buses. I notice the 1128 steering column application along with some of the 1600s and 1700s at Kedzie not having bike rack ads around the same time I submitted that survey. I haven't decided yet whether it's just coincidence or CTA actually listening to one of its riders for once.

Hey, could anyone post a picture of the before and after with the fleet #? Without getting thrown in the slammer of course :D Busjack mentioned you have license plates on your buses? Must be a state by state thing because we don't have them here. On the Bluebirds which have a place for a plate they just add the bus # there. Busfaning aside it should be important to have the # visible in case an eyewitness sees something happen so they can report the # at least.

I spotted 7700 on the 6 at Michigan and Randolph with the number on the steering column.

My favorite spot for bus fleet numbers is on the roof. I love it that CTA and PACE, this is now standard practice on all new vehicles. I love being able to spot a bus from an L stop or a downtown high rise. Ive done this up at the 95th in the John Hancock Ctr. Up there of course you have to use binoculars.
