Howard Red/Purple/Yellow Line Station

Why did the CTA switch the places where you board the Red,Purple,and Yellow Lines.

Quite simply, I think because of ongoing construction.

Note that you can exit the station on the north side of Howard St.

I think it would be nice if they had included 2 way roto-gates on the north side of Howard [think of the 33rd street exit to the 35th street Red Line station.

I really wish they had rebuilt Howard the same way as they rebuilt Belmont & Fullerton.  With wider platforms, more stairs & escalators & not that insanely goofy way of going up & over the tracks & then down to the platforms.  There was plenty of room on the west side of the right of way to expand the station.

The up and over was because the engineers didn't think that the embankment was stable enough to dig into it; the construction (west station entrance and the row of storefronts) is west of the embankment wall. It's different than at Belmont and Fullerton, which were on steel structure, and the structure was just expanded to the east. What would have been necessary is something like what's now being done from Lawrence to Ardmore, with putting up a new structure on columns. I don't know if that was contemplated, and, given the complexity of the rail connections there, could have been done while retaining service.
