Artics on Clark?

How often does that happen?

I don't think I've ever seen any artics run on Clark in the past, even during a ball game at Wrigley it's usually a lot of 40' NFs and Flxibles.

Yesterday I stuck around at Addison for a quarter of an hour just to take a ride on 4025 since I've never seen an artic on Clark, and I was curious as to how that went. So around 1530, NF 4025P 201 pulled up, southbound at the time, and I got on. There were no problems navigating, but it can get pretty narrow and tricky on Clark at times (thinking of Wrightwood and Belden during afternoons). There was one southbound on Halsted a block north of Barry too. It's not unusual seeing as North Park has 4000s, but, it sure can't be common.

Since 4000s have been spotted on Halsted before, could NP be running some tests to see how artics do on narrow and busy routes? It would make sense, since 22 gets pretty packed at times, and the 36 can too once it gets on to Clark.

Well then check out for P683 sometime after midnite on saturday nites....if i dont feel like trading my 4000 in during my fallback at the garage off the 147...u mite just get your wish! Lol

Ive seen a couple... far and few between. 4059 was on the 36 a couple of weeks back a couple of times. I would also like to see more on the 22 and 36 during rush hour in particular, but given the articulated bus shortage, this might be on the back burner... for now.

I do remember seeing an arctic or two on occasion at night during the weekdays on 22 clark just before or about the time that owl service would start before the NABIs were sidelined. I was surprised the first time I saw it occur. I didn't think any would be spotted after the NABIs were parked.

That's funny you mentioned this, I saw the same bus Friday going Northbound at Clark/Division.

Back in the 1980's, there were Articulated buses on Addison right before and after the ball game (I know, because I use to go to school up there). They were all M.A.N. Articulated bus (mostly on the 152 Addison route), never did see a 22 Clark bus using one. And yes, they did run Articulated bus on Clark, since I remembered riding a 24 Wentworth M.A.N. 7000-series bus going on down on Clark to Cermak and to Wentworth, and I am somewhat surprised that it made that tight turn on Wentworth. Fast forwarding to 2009, you will be lucky to see an Articulated 22 Clark bus running on Clark, since it does need to make that tight turn on Polk Street (near the old Dearborn Station, usually there are cars sitting at the light on Polk and Clark, much more during the old Santa Fe days), and back onto Dearborn. I know the 62 Archer local (not the 62 Archer Express) had to make that turn from State to Dearborn, heading north.

Which is why I was surprised to see one able to turn from Cermak to Wentworth on the 24 Wentworth route in the 1980's-early 1990's. However, Polk Street on Clark is a little more tighter, even the old GMC Fishbowl bus had a hard time making that turn without someone backing up.

True, the distance to the pivot point is shorter, but there are two pivot points on an artic. The back section is like a trailer and you have to be careful. If you don't pull out far enough into the intersection before making a right hand turn you'll end up on the sidewalk, and, if it's a crowded street, hit parked cars. If you don't keep your distance from the curb you have to swing left and make a wide right unless you want to suffer the above.

A 60' artic can navigate a little easier in tight turns than a straight 40' because of two separate pivot points, but there's a little more to controlling it.
