CTA bus iPhone apps

A very cool live arrival time iPhone app just got released for CTA bus riders... It's called NextBus CTA. I recommend it; probably the best yet. Here's the link.

I like the Transit Map feature... but I kind of hate the UI. The iPhone felt-tip font overlaid on a picture of a chalkboard is the "upcoming buses" screen? No thanks, I'll stay with Buster for now.

EDIT:

I think it should also be noted that greatrat00 is the developer of this app... so of course he'd recommend it. laugh.gif

Scionic, I never tried to hide that I am the developer (obvious from the fact that I registered with the same name as my e-mail address shown on my app). I was recommending it because I've used both CTA Tracker and Buster and was fully satisfied by neither. Buster was way closer though.

Here's a promo code so you can get a real feel for NextBus CTA: 4TAX97EA7WMK

Let me know what you think about the interface after you play with it. And check out the AR feature, which is unique to this app.

He might not have tried to hide it, but he certainly didn't disclose it.

I didn't object here, since it is related to the subject of chicagobus.org, but I see that he is also doing this on other sites, in violation of rules dealing with conflict of interest and commercial advertising. In my mind, that is no better than the purported sellers of knock off goods (and alleged identity thieves) spamming Tribune message boards.

So, Adam, if you are not trying to hide it, don't say you are "recommending it," with a lot of puffery; instead, say something like "I developed this app and want your feedback about it." Also, disclose whether you are being compensated for putting it on the app store (although looking again, I see that it is on sale for 99 cents, so the inference can be made that you are using the posts in violation of guidelines regarding commercial ventures).

I'm not familiar with those rules at all. Are these International Rules, U.S. rules, or rules regarding this forum?

In any case, I'm not trying to trick anybody. I developed an app because I thought the other ones out there were not good enough. I spent a good amount of time developing it. It's a shame for it to be out there and for people not to find out about it, so I posted it on two forums (including this one). I might not have worded it according to your rules; my mistake, I wasn't aware of the rules you mention.

What I really wanted was visibility and feedback. I wasn't looking to trick anybody into giving me $0.70.

So, Busjack or any others, if you're interested in testing it out and giving me feedback I would be happy to give you a promo code so that you can download it for free.

There are Community Guidelines (link at top of each page of the forum). While I don't see anything there in point for commercial messages, I'm sure that the moderator could expand on that.

In another place where I saw a post with a link to this app, that site definitely had guidelines about commercials and conflict of interest. Therefore, I suggest looking at the Help or, as indicated above, Guidelines page before assuming that something is completely kosher.

We haven't had a specific policy regarding commercial posts, as thus far we've rarely encountered them on the forum. Since there's current no official policy in place, I'll let this thread slide. Given that this a commercial application, I would have preferred if there was a clear disclaimer of who developed the app and more of a solicitation for feedback rather than a sales pitch.
