If it came from St Cloud, MN, that would be about 472 miles. Also MCI has a sales facility in Des Plaines . ... The answer appears to be Crookston, MN, which is approximately 700 miles from Chicago, depending on where in the area the bus showed up. What got me there was a search for "motor coach industries assembly plant," which lead to this article that NFI/MCI is closing the MCI plant in Pembina, North Dakota, but has a plant in Crookston. Apparently, being that near to Winnipeg was not worth it.

Various semi-reliable sites indicate that it became TMC (remember the CTA 4400s), then was sold to NovaBus, which dumped it, and then was purchased by Millennium Transit, which turned out to be a joke

Busjack
Various sources (e.g. Metro Magazine) have that instead of closing the MCI North Dakota plant, NFI expanded it to make electric buses. I also happened to come across this video on Training for MCI D45-CRT LE. Are all buses now that complicated?
Mr.Transit
MCI just won a contract with the Houston Metro for 100 D45 CRT high floor buses.
