My day on #82 and #155 (Oct. 20, 2007)

Hi everyone, just here to give a brief. I rode buses #801 (northbound and #809 (southbound) on #82 Kimball-Homan. Going on #82 was fun. I also rode #155. I rode bus #1449 on that route and I noticed how many different ethnic groups are around there. It was fun, but what was even funner was that me and my sister didn't have to get off the bus once we reached Morse Red Line station. The driver simply sat there for a few minutes, changed the outside bus sign (the inside sign was out), then took off again. I have a question regarding this route: why are buses so crowded even on Saturdays?

I rode #76 back home, but didn't like the fact it took so long for the westbound buses to come. There were at least 3 when they arrived at the Logan Square Blue Line Terminal. It took 30+ minutes for those buses to arrive. For those of you interested, check out my bus videos on YouTube. They'll be up later. For pics, check out my website and you know where the link is.

Let me tell you about Devon. It's like one of the shortest bus routes in the system. And if you even think they don't get any passengers? Just be lucky if you ever getting a seat when the bus either leaves the Kedzie terminal or even leaving California when going eastbound. Or if you get a seat when you get on at Sheridan & Loyola going back west. I can personally say it gets crowded during all of rush hour and even on Weeknights until the end of operation for the day. I rarely rode the #155 on Weekends but I know during those days it gets really crowded like its a regular rush hour day. My biggest pet-peeve is some of the passengers get on with multiple bags and buggies after going to neighboring stores and they take almost 2 minutes to place all the bags to the seat where they'll be sitting and go back to the farebox and pays their fare, and they even take thier time doing that. Almost all the time I rode Devon without getting on at Kedzie or Morse & Glenwood, I would never get a seat unless the buses get to late and there 2 buses behind each other which I would catch the following bus.

Drivers can oftenly be late on a small route like this because there always alot of traffic on the street during Rush and Weekends.

It's nothing too special about the #82 Kimball-Homan. It's always crowded on that street during the day. Especially when school is in session. Buses can really be late when they pick up the school kids on top of picking up and dropping off passengers to the train stations. When all of that occurs, drivers can get furious for when they're five or even fifteen minutes late for that matter. When I ride the #82 from the north end and know the ride is an hour before I get off so I usually go to sleep at the back of the bus. It's not really like I haven't seen anything before on this street. It's a very productive route nonetheless.

Yes, I do agree about the passengers on the #155. But you have to consider that that neighborhood on Devon is a small street with stores close together on both sides of the street. So most of the passengers will be people with groceries or other bought items living their normal lives. And it doesn't matter if it bothers you that people with bags have to get on, and if they pay the fare then there's no problem with it. The CTA is getting an advantage with this and haven't you noticed that with out those people riding the #155, it would be cut anyway, Doomsday or not. The #82 is a good route but only on weekdays- midday and rush hour- when all of those 4400s are running.

You see two or three buses show up at one time, if youve ridden the buses long enough you would know they will be delayed because of traffic especially on saturdays. Delays are caused by traffic, road construction, bad weather, slow passengers who like holding up the show! But of course the ignorant public loves taking out their frustration and blame on the bus operators, these are the same ignorant people who see the delays happen, these are the same people who cause the delays because they dont have their fares ready, or theyre carrying too much garbage aboard the bus. If the bus arrives late and two or three show up this is a small portion of why. I could go on and on about this, Im sure other operators will agree with me on this.

I rode the bus yesterday, I should know. I rode it going to Morse, then back to Kedzie.

I just didn't realize at first how crowded #155 could get, but now that i've ridden it, I understand. I was lucky enough to get a seat when the bus left Kedzie and stayed in that seat until we got back to Kedzie. I also understand everything you've written.
