Why XP onboard buses?

At least they're not running Vista. Then nothing would ever work. :D

But seriously, I tend to think that Linux is indeed a better choice for powering high-demand applications that run 24x7. I've been told that the self checkout machines at Jewel, which also run XP, tend to become very sluggish if they haven't been rebooted in a while. This is an issue that I doubt would occur on the Linux platform, considering its more robust architecture.

I tend to think that corporate bureaucracy, combined with Microsoft's monopoly power, is the reason why Windows is often chosen for applications that would be better suited by Linux or another superior platform. But that's just my biased opinion.

If the inference from the link is to the fare collection equipment, CTA got whatever Cubic was providing at the time.

Also, since the link refers to Mumbai (Bombay), I'm sure it is easier to get tech support there. Ask anyone who has dealt with Symantec.

Tell me about it!!! I hate having to run these machines when they are like this, but I know how to fix the problem for good!!!(takes 10 lb. Sledgehammer to Self-Checkouts) DIE!!!

Glad to see you're back. But is it a coincidence that there is a thread bashing Windows, and then the server goes down, or the WRATH of GATES?

ChicagoBus.org runs on Linux, not Windows, but then again the "wrath of Gates" likely has no operating system boundaries. ;)

Indeed, Linux has a much more reliable uptime than windows and even Mac. The reason windows boxes become sluggish after time is because the hard drive fragments so much. Linux has very little, if any, fragmentation. This combined with very reliable stability of the OS makes it possible to run a linux box for years without a reboot.
