48th Ward Ald. Osterman says it's related to "Red Ahead":

Edit: Yep, nothing we didn't already know. Mayor Emanuel, Governor Quinn, Senator Durbin and Others Announce Key Improvements Along CTA's North Red Line Stations

At least based on the link in the first part, I don't see how this is any different than the stop gap project to fix up stations on the north Red Line, discussed in this forum starting about here.

In fact, the CTA Tattler said this week that CTA Spokesperson said that the project was slightly delayed due to material shortages.

So that is nothing new.

A bunch of politicians getting some face time is also nothing new. Durbin keeps getting it without providing ANY evidence that the grants he promised have ever materialized.

The Infrastructure Trust also got its share of publicity.

EDIT: So long as a TEA bill has not passed, Durbin can't hand out anything big, like $2 billion to start the 130th St Red Line extension.

Hence, I don't see any justification for the headline "Future of Chicago Mass Transit." Now, if it were something like the RTA and CTA boards decided that they were incompetents and decided to turn management over to MV and then resign en masse, that would be something, but some politicians getting a press op IS NOT.

Anyway, the CTA Tattler just posted a guest blog that the big news was that they came up with another $29 million for the north Red Line project.

So, the Future of Chicago Mass Transit is that it is only about $7.92 billion in need of capital improvement instead of $8 billion, and any RPM project is even farther away.

Update: Tribune story.
