At the Committee on Finance Audit and Budget meeting prior to the regular February, 2013 Chicago Transit Board (CTA) is was revealed that the Authority will receive eight extra 5000 series rail cars in exchange for credits accumulating from the manufacture and delivery of up to 706 rapid transit cars. The extra cars would carry roster numbers 5707-5714. The majority of credits resulted from adjustments to the amount of spare parts anticipated in carrying out the contracts. The original contract amount consisted of the Base Order for 206 railcars and Option No. 1 for 200 railcars. Three additional options have been exercised; Option No. 2 for 216 railcars, Option Nos. 3A for 56 railcars and No. 3B for 28 railcars for a contract total of 706 railcars.

A CTA vice president amusingly responded to a question, "What are you gonna do with these extra cars?"

"We're gonna run 'em," he responded with a smile.

Without elaboration a followup discussion at the meeting indicated the possibility that some future retirements resulting from receipt of 5000 series and projected 7000 series railcars would not be scrapped but would be set aside to allow for a still greater increase in the size of the CTA car fleet if needed at that time, in addition to the number added from new cars. Also even though it is unknown who the builder of the 7000 series will be, the CTA expects many parts will mutually fit both the 5000 and 7000 series cars.

5707-5714? Now that makes sense.

Then they can start wrecking half pairs and create 5715-5716, sorta like 6721-6722, 3457-3458...... :P .

At least we know why the other requisition wasn't for a 5707 series of 846 cars, like what Pace would have done.

Update: I think we got the answer on whether the last pair would be rehabbed, with on 3200 body and one 2600 body. No.
