Participants used tickets printed in the style of old North Shore Line interurban railroad.Newest verus oldest....a Yellow line 5000 series train is in the east pocket while the four-car 2400 charter occupies the west pocket. Yes, the four-car charter did berth at Dempster. A internet photograph is making the rounds showing an eight-car 4000 train on a 1974 IRM Snowflake Special and it too, berthed at Dempster. Back then, the motorman and conductor had to split the consist into two halves for the move. Sunday's charter made sure that a photo and rest stop was made at Midway Terminal, since this was the last terminal where the 2400s made their last revenue runs.Paying a debt to the years of service spent on the Green line the charter made photo stop at Cottage Grove terminal over E. 63rd St. CTA's 2400 Series Historical Cars took a trip around the system Sunday, Apr. 19, 2015. This was a private charter that began from the Yellow line Dempster Skokie terminal with judicious door opening of the four-car train and was scheduled to route over Red, Brown, Green, Pink and Yellow lines. Among several photo stops was one at the city's newest station, Cermak- Mc Cormick Place.The charter was named “THE SEVENTH SOJOURN” and was a joint venture of two L-railfans; Zabelny/Wolodarsky Consortium. As on other charters held in the past, participation is limited and trips are designed for groups is 40. With so small a group, the participants are more relaxed and afforded more room and less haste. The tour will often change schedules mid-stream and stop for photo sessions as the need arises. Of course the fares are higher then your typical charter like IRM Specials and extreme low-budget CTA farewell specials which are handled with just the basic fare. The published schedule call for using usual train turning locations, Clark Tower, Paulina Jct, 37th Middle Track. In addition, the charter was authorized by the bulletin to use any in-service crossover, interlocking or middle track to turn back or clear for revenue service. Usual locations are equipped with route selectors, if the location is not a manned tower. Trip planners use their knowledge in taking advantage of these places for extra moves. Sunday, charter supervision and director took advantage to make changes. A non-stop-run went to Cottage Grove. The trip to the Harlem-Lake and a trip to Linden will wait till next time. Only Clark Tower made one turn back move. The CTA in 2014, retired its fleet of 2400 series manufactured in 1976-1978, by Boeing-Vertol but eight cars have been restored to their original color scheme and placed in a historical collection. When I saw this, I was immediately taken back to my early 20s!!!!! 5000s aside, the 2400s in these shots, in their original livery, look as good in 2015 as they did when they were brand new, coming fresh off the Boeing Vertol assembly line in the mid to late '70s.
