lilssridah
Hello all,I'm new to the group and I been wondering, Back in 1992 Downtown loop flooded because of damage to old Chicago Tunnel Company tunnels by kinzie bridge from installation of wood pilling were installed punctured those tunnels which caused the flood. I read Blue line and red line underground were flooded during that time. Are there any access to these tunnels in the underground Blue and red line? or remnants of the tunnels? Rene. Rene. The remnants of the tunnels are undoubtedly still there, used for fiber optic cables and the like, but the reports were that the water leaked through the subway walls, rather than there were direct connections between the subway and freight tunnels. Rene. The CTA tunnels they flooded are still in use, the flooding was at Lake/Milwaukee right where the river is and it's also the lowest point. For a while they had replaced the tunnel lighting with yellow box lighting like what's in the o'hare tunnel, but the lighting has changed to the universal type used now when they rehabbed the dearborn subway and replaced it's ties. A funny thing to recall would be if the tunnels flooded in 1992, did they ever replace the wooden ties that were submerged in water. The answer according to the NTSB was no, because they had a accident there regarding the ties separating in the 2000's. The ties were original 1950's era. The red line flooded where it crossed the river also but it was not as extensive a repair. If you want to see the old freight tunnels, if you remember the old Geraldo special where they opened Al Capone's vault they had in the 80's, they show the freight tunnels. If you want to see it, it's only in one place on Geraldo's site (it's not on youtube or anywhere) and it's downloadable just right click on the video and click save video and you can watch the whole thing on your pc. By the way it's a good biography of Capone, no wonder Geraldo is so proud of it, it made his career. Busjack
It appears that the subway floods started there because that was the low point in the subway, not that there was a direct connection between the subways and the river above them. The O'Hare tunnel had the original lights. Someone posted a video from 1997 below. Grand is also skipped near the beginning of the video. Remember, the tunnels aren't at the same height at that location because of the flying junction near Clark/Lake.

Someone posted a video from 1997 below. Grand is also skipped near the beginning of the video. Remember, the tunnels aren't at the same height at that location because of the flying junction near Clark/Lake.And we can guess which is the lower tunnel, because the water will pool in the lowest spot. Interesting enough this year they replaced the lighting in the tollway tunnel, (just east of Rosemont/Blue) which was originally the same yellow box lighting, also to the universal lighting. I'm wondering if the O'Hare tunnel may be next. I think it's one of the only places in the system with those lights except maybe the Linden tunnel or possibly the tunnel connector between roosevelt and cermak-chinatown on the red.
