As of today, it is official that Metra will be switching to the new-style stationary seats.  See https://metrarail.com/about-metra/newsroom/metra-purchase-new-modern-seats

Their own release includes this beautiful statement, which basically says that Metra doesn't care that many people don't want to ride backwards:

Quote

Most respondents indicated they were unsatisfied with the direction the new seats face (the stationary design means that half of seats face backwards), however, the majority of customers who had an opinion about the new seats were satisfied with both their comfort and size.

But the statement seemed accommodating on other matters. Looks like the bottom line is that the flip over seats are no longer that available.

There's one advantage to the new seats. I'll always be able to see how many people are lining up early to get off at either my stop or downtown, so I'll never have to turn around to guess when I should stand up.
