Official site for Redefine the Drive, with planning to rebuild N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive from Grand to Hollywood. Sun-Times report on the Aug. 8 meeting says that  the planners were not recommending bus lanes, but lengthening some ramps, but that didn't go over well with the crowd.

This anti-car crowd is insane.  These are the same loons who got Clark St. from Devon to Ridge narrowed to just one traffic lane. Now it's a mess, same amount of cars, now backed up all the time.  Exactly where would all the cars using LSD go?  Those people aren't going to leave their cars home & take a CTA bus & all sane people know that.

The best answer is to do what California tried for a couple of years & then dropped it.  They put huge arrows on the rear of the buses & made it mandatory for all vehicles to let the bus into traffic when the drive activated that special arrow.  That would let the LSD express buses move better & then get ahead of traffic jams & be able to jump the exit jams.

On your last point, Chicago drivers would just honk at or cut off the bus until the bus sent the car into the lake, in which case DLSD would really be backed up.  You didn't say why CA gave up on it.

My overall reaction is that DLSD was supposed to be a parkway, not an expressway. It seems to work o.k. south of 23rd St., but not north of there. I also think traffic on the north side can be reduced by the parking tax proposed in the MMA law as well as my earlier proposal to divert some express bus riders to the L.
