Again, an illustration of logic. Unless you are at the junk yard, you aren't seeing them retiring. However, Danielsmusic sure saw one that wasn't (as of this moment).

Web enabled cell phone?

Yep. I was on the bus headed south, and as soon as we turned south on Michigan, the operator pulled the bus over and ran into Dunkin' Donuts to get coffee. When she got back on, she said, "Ha! There ain't no supervisor on the runway here!" I didn't get the runway part. I would've been mad if her coffee break took a long time, but considering the speed of that Flxible, I don't think her stop slowed my trip down at all.

Yes 5300s have been notorious for being slow to accelerate. It has a lot to do with how the air conditioning units are connected to the motor as mentioned in numerous previous posts. The A/C drains a lot to power from the motor. And that leaking roof vent is nothing new with Flxible Metros. I've experienced that during rain or snow with some 6000s as well, but not to the same degree or frequency that I would with the 5300s. I also use to experience it all the time with the Flxible Metros that used to serve Champaign-Urbana's MTD back when I attended the University of Illinois campus down there in 1993-94 before transferring to a school here in Chicago. I thought it was odd that I would experience this flaw in similar buses in a different town until that I found out that this is a flaw that has plagued Flxible in most of their Metro models.

Yeah, I used to ride the ones in Champaign-Urbana every weekend. While my aunt was sick, I went to visit and help her every Friday night. The C-U New Flyers are much better than their (possibly now retired) Flxibles.

If I was on that bus with you, I've would asked her, why didn't she get her coffee at Union Station Dunkin Donuts while at a layover. I also did seen #5670 running X28 on Stony Island/ 63rd going north this afternoon. I will surely miss the 5300s.

Last year, When I was in Newark, New Jersey: I've rode their 1988 Flxible Metros 40096-6T for New Jersey Transit from Newark to New YOrk City Penn Station, it accelerates way faster as New Flyers and alot better shape as the 6000s.

The question is that are the 5700s with Cummings Engine like #5749 is still on the road? I know that the 5749 is already gone though.

At last mention of the Cummins models, 5746 was the last remaining such bus and was assigned to Kedzie. I don't know if that still the case because I haven't seen this bus since late summer/early fall. It may be that it's been retired by now and there are no longer any Cummins powered 5300s left. Maybe some of the other members know for sure.

Maybe the two of you can figure out who each of you is.

I wonder how relevant the air conditioner drag is during a snow storm, unless some component that is running is part of the heat.

One thing I have seen on Flxibles of several transit authorities, including CTA, is the duct tape where the headsign box meets the roof.

As I understood it, there is some component through the climate control system that interconnects both both the heat and the A/C, because there have been times in the winter when a driver practically has to floor it to get a 5300 to move at a decent pace.

I didn't need to ask her. I got on at Union Station during the layover and saw that she spent the entire time trying to fix the leak.

Regardless they shouldnt be taking a break during a run. Thats what a layover is for. I didnt do that when I was an operator at CTA. Only unless it was a dire emergency bathroom break which happened to me twice in my 7 years at CTA. Other than that I never left a bus during a run to get coffee or donuts or whatever.

5746 is still in service at Kedzie.

Seems that Flxible Metros been having issues with leaks, because I've been on bunch of 6000s from 74th with leaks from a emergency exit roofs.

Yeah. Just doublechecking from the prior posts in this thread, it's safe to say that it's a universal design flaw not limited to the CTA's Metros.
