Garage Codes

Why is it that Chicago ave still has "5" as a garage code. Stickers put on the buses are "C", yet most run numbers are prefixed with "5". For that matter, why was it "5" and not "C" from the start. Where did the "5" come from, it really makes no sense on the surface (since Chicago replaced North ave (N))

Also, why does 74th still have the old 69th street designation ("6") instead of perhaps "W" (Wood Street). Obviously it can't have a "7" since 77th Street has that already.

And I guess your next question would be why does 103rd Garage has an "03" sticker on their windshield and their code is a "1"?

Truthfully I don't really know. I remembering about over 2 years ago on the Flxibles, they had their Garage Run Numbers starting with a "C" but I didn't really think that was an official code since all the Novas still had a 5 for their Garage Code.

I'm sure it basically is what letters were on the roll signs in the run box, now only on 1995 and earlier buses. As previously mentioned, the garage was North and Cicero and had an N code. That then forced North Park to have a P Code. They should have made North and Cicero C.

Unless there is proof that there is a C on the roll sign, Chicago just took the 5 that was no longer being used by 52nd.

Of course, being lazy, they never updated it when most of the buses went to the electronic run box signs. You also see some electronic run boxes that just have 021, rather than 5021.

Of course, 6 is for 69, and you couldn't change it to 7 when it went to 74th. And there is no Wood garage, and there would have had to be a W in the roll sign, since there is no 74th bus that has an electronic run box.

If you remember garage stickers did not appear on buses until the 9200's showed up at Limits, and if I recall, they didn't have the garage in the run box, just the sticker on the windshield. As for North and Cicero being an "N" code, the garage was North ave, not Cicero, therefore the "N" designation, although in hidsight, the "C" would have wound up working perfectcly. In the same vain, there is no Wood Street garage, however the 74th street garage is at 74th and Wood (thus my logic). Your explanation for the "5" makes sense.

This is all so silly trivial, though. The way they are moving buses around, no need to put a sticker to identify where it belongs, because, I don't think anyone knows where these buses belong anymore. Or is it done because record keeping is so bad, no one can tell :P:P .
