trainman8119
Way back when, someplace, there was a discussion on some of the old MAN artics and some wondered what the demos looked like. I found a couple of pics out of the CTA at 45 book. Here they are...
Busjack
These were well publicized (at least at the time). The reports in this forum about the green 40 foot and mixed 60 foot New Flyers were not. Of course, I understand that there weren't phone cams and web postings in that day, but wonder if any one else has an experience with them. The report about the 60 foot NF also shows that CTA management had first-hand knowledge that NF had an articulated bus, while NABI was selling previously unmanufactured goods. I wonder what was in the NABI bid that forced CTA's hand (probably was price, although in this type of procurement it is not determinative). I did ride on the Silver Painted bus to O'Hare on a Sunday. I knew it was running on the route and made sure I took a ride. The 7000 series MAN's were identical in ride and interior...the only real difference was the destination signs, the finished product having more traditional CTA design than those in the pics. The 7000's were also the first to display a route number in the rear, in a little hat like box above the rear window. The second batch of these buses (7100's) did not have this. Tamir4317
Are those MANs are made in 1979, the first CTA's MANs before 1983s? No. Those are the demonstrator buses from MAN which CTA tested in 1974. They liked them so much, they ordered 19 MAN artics (7000's) in 1979. And of course, the 7100's in 1983.
