#7629 Burned Up

How many so far retired, just those 2 burned up ones? Are they planning retire some NABIs when BRTs come?

As far as anyone knows no. From what has been discussed in other threads, the only thing that supposed to happen, if anything, with the NABIs when the Hybrid Arctics (it hasn't been established that all will be for BRT service) is that some NABIs may get work done to bring them into a decent working state and to work out the issues a lot of them have been having.

I am willing to bet that the next NABI to be burned up is 7708. This thing went by Michigan and Randolph yesterday morning and sounded like it's engine was ready to fall out. I heard it coming from at least 2 blocks away and heard it after it passed for 2 blocks. It was on the 6 northbound. It sounded like it had bent fans or something, was all black around the bottom of the rear and had dark smoke emmitinig from underneath as it accelerated as it rattled, loudly, along.

Which is why I've been avoiding the Lake Shore routes that have nothing but NABIs operating for a large portion of their service hours: 14, 134, 135(AM rush), 146, 147, and 148(PM rush). If I'm going anywhere where I may need a Lake Shore express route, I'll use 6 (during times it has a lot of NOVAs or NFs), 26, X28, 135 (when you can get a 40 footer in PM), 136 (same as 135 PM), and 144. Ever since it came up that the NABIs weren't put through proper testing regimens before being acquired and put on the road, I just don't trust riding them too much. There were plenty of NP NABIs that I noticed having that black exhaust soot problem.

I haven't ridin any NABI since #7629 burned down, Im very afraid to ride them, those things maybe only 4-5 years old but to me, they are not worth it for a rebuilt/ rehab. As for #7708, that one should be next to retire, The Hybrids will be here soon anyways.

I will tell you this, On 14 Jeffery Express: you wouldn't have to worry about it that much cause NABIs barely on it on weekends especially sundays. As for #6: it really needs them Saturday nights LOL.

Gosh, I miss the MAN 7100s/ Ex-Seattles.

You know, I saw that same bus yesterday, going southbound on the #6 after I got off from school; I didn't notice the number, so I didn't think it was something big, but after hearing about this here, i decided to tell what I saw, and boy was it loud!!
