trainman8119 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Share Posted February 27, 2009 While sitting on LSD this morning, a fairly new (like 4083) came along side of me. As it went by, I happened to notice that the MAN logo was emblazoned into the hubs of the rear wheels. As every 4000 went by, I checked it out and all of the rear wheels have this as part of the hub. I did take a pic of 1, but the quality stinks and I am having trouble getting it from my phone to the computer (where I could get a better idea of the quality). So, in some way MAN has some part in the hybrid artics, whether as a supplier, or who knows....more !!! It'd probably be next to impossible to find specs on 1995 model buses in 2009! NOVA LFS buses have MAN axles(specs don't show it now on their home page, as we bought our models in 2001-2002. But when we ordered them, I believe they had the MAN axles. Maybe even more than just MAN axles.) New Flyer D40LF, DE40LF, and DE60LF have MAN axles I cannot speak for the NABI's or Optimas(except the Optimas are on the road... Top that, NABI!!!) . Your LFSes have ZF axles just like every other NovaBus LFS. New Flyer only offers MAN axles as of 2006*. They used to offer ArvinMeritor rear axles, but they were never too popular with New Flyers, so New Flyer dropped the option and just stuck with MAN. *However, the trackless trolley buses don't come with MAN rear axles, but ArvinMeritors due to the drivetrain setup. In 2006 MAN changed the design of their rear axles, due to the modification the axles now make a medium pitched whining sound when the bus hits speeds over about 25 MP/h, 2006 is also the year MAN started putting "MAN" onto the hubs of their rear axles. On the older MAN axles (pre-2006) the rear axles only produced low pitched whining sounds which is much less irritating to the ears than the sound that comes off the newer ones. Well, since the first Chicago New Flyer was unveiled on Feb. 14, 2006, I guess we can come to our own conclusions, unless one wants to start looking for the trademark on each hub. Then why are CTA's DE60LF axles marked with the MAN logo? Not to mention, CTA's current NF LFs are from 2006 and after.
