trainman8119 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Share Posted March 9, 2009 Way back when, corrupt/convict Governor Ryan jacked up our license plates about triple to fund the Illinois Worst (er First) program which was to pay for some highway work, but gave oodles and oodles of money to mass transit, much which was used to purchase new equipment. Now this money was dished out eons ago, the purchases made, but yet, my license plates are still $78. I feel like I am being taken, again. Where is that money now...does transit get any of it...the roads don't seem much better ...or has the state just pocketed it (for Rod's defense ) ???? Busjack Posted March 9, 2009 Report Share Posted March 9, 2009 As usual, the license plate fee didn't directly pay for the infrastructure. It funded bonds that did so. The bonds probably still have 20 years to go. Of course, some of the infrastructure it funded were the NABI buses. The question is how much taxes, license plate fees, or whatever would really have to be to fund continuing needs, as opposed to the latest bond issue, the money for which runs out in 4 or 5 years, while the obligation lives for 30. The issue in Indiana was that you used to have to show a paid personal property tax receipt to get your plates, but then they decided it was easier to abolish that tax and roll it into the plates. That is quite common in other Midwest states, and you hear about stuff like people in Ohio using Kentucky plates, because of the Ohio taxes included in the license fee.
