artthouwill
This weekend, the CTA has a Loop L reroute in progress. The Orange and Brown Lines are operating as one thru route via the Lake and Wabash elevated in both directions. The Green and Pink Lines are operating via Wells and Van Buren in both directions with Pink Lines terminating at Roosevelt Rd. The reason given is for signal upgrades in the Loop. In the past when they have done the reroutes, all of the trains operated via the inner tracks OR via the outer tracks. In essence, trains are not "crossing" (buto only turning at) Tower 18 Junction, but are crossing or turning at Tower 17. Can someone explain why this is? Why this way and not the Orange/Brown operate via Van Buren Wells and the Green and Pink via Lake Wabash?
Busjack
Do you know where the signal work is actually occurring, which probably is the explanation? The Press Release says that "crews will be installing a new signal control facility at Lake and Wells. ... During these hours, the signal controls will be unable to operate mechanically and trains manually will be flagged through the intersection by crews on the tracks." So if the switch at Tower 18 can't be operated, they can't be switching there. They must have figured that turning was easier than going through, although Green and Pink making a left turn seems a bit strange.

Actually, it is a bit strange for Green Line trains to make a left turn from northbound Wells to westbound Lake. Pink Line trains always make a left turn from northbound Wells to westbound Lake at that junction. It is also a bit strange for any revenue train to make a right turn from eastbound Lake to southbound Wells.

I saw a Railcar #3159 which is a Pink Line train on a Southbound Roosevelt Stop with "Loop" destinated then switched to "Out of Service", I was like what is going on, then 5 minutes later I spotted an Pink Like going Northbound way on Roosevelt Stop with "54/Cermak".
