New Anti-Loitering Sign for Bus Shelter

Remember the topic I started way back on the CTA rail terminal signage that prohibited continuous riding?

Well, Sunday afternoon I was in Uptown taking pictures for my neighborhoods collection on Flickr. When I came across a new Anti-Loitering sign at the 151 SB bus shelter at Wilson/Sheridan. It said "Seating for CTA Customers Only." I haven't seen these anywhere else yet. Has anyone else seen these new signs?

This is the first time I even heard of any of these. All the shelters I've come across still only have the standard advertisement and system map.

Haven't seen any. There may have been complaints of homeless people in the shelters but you would think the seat seperations on the seat bench would deter that. Something that should be looked at is installing schedules in the shelters especially on routes with a 30 minute interval.

Do you mean the N151 when you talk about 30 minute intervals?

I mean't 30 minute waits in general. After feb alot more service will be on 20-30 minute intervals. It would be a nice addition to the shelters, like the system maps. Not everyone can check Bustracker. (Maybe their phone is dead or they don't have one.) This way they can know within seconds if the bus is scheduled to come now or later. (especialy helpful when unfamilier with the route) That's one thing that's nice about some PACE shelters. If you don't have a schedule you still can know when your bus is coming.

We need signs like this in the bus shelters on Milwaukee Ave. from Central Park to Belmont as there's a serious problem with the homeless loitering in the bus shelters.

The signs do absolutely nothing. Get rid of the shelter. Thats the only way you'll solve the problem. Unfortunate for people who actually NEED the seat while waiting on the bus.

Of course, Mayor Daley would then lose the advertising money from the French owner of the "street furniture."

They need those signs around the parks. I seen a homeless woman yesterday hanging out at the Western/Montrose NB shelter yesterday. She had bags littering the sidewalk around her. I can see how this may be a problem. I don't really know what the signs would do to improve the problem, can the police really make these people leave. Isn't that public property? I used to notice more homeless hanging at Jeff Pk in the 1990's. I don't seem to see them as much. I know that they call the police on the homeless there. That may be why I haven't seen any there lately. The only way I really see any signs working would be to enforce it through the police, but I wonder if that imposes on there civil rights. Really those people need to be brought to a shelter so they can get some help or they may see them again.

The Decaux company obviously wouldn't be able to get the right to put the shelters there by paying the city, unless they were on public property. Loitering on public property would be a crime,* but, as you note, there probably can't be anything done effectively about the homeless.

_____________

*As in the case of Naperville getting an injunction against the guy camping on the street.

Come on now jackson. That's a bit extreme. I don't care about the stupid seat as much as not having to stand in the elements in Chicago's sometimes extreme weather. As for a homeless person being there, as long as they're not harassing anyone I can take that in stride.
