Frozen Signs

i saw last week a Nova out of Archer on Damen and its sign was stuck to Not In Service and run time A999

Any bus you see with 999 in the run box the Clever Device is in Manual Mode and you can manually set your sign to anything programmed, Not In Service being one of them. So, the sign wasn't frozen.

Today, i've spotted #6282 at Ashland/ Orange Line Station working #X9 Ashland Exp. Northbound. But theres an Error:

"9 Ashland Exp."

"9 To Irving Park"

"Red Line Station"

"Via Yellow Line" (Error)

Why is Yellow Line on there? Actually I was on Yellow Line 2 days ago, its a good ride!!

I've seen "Via Yellow Line" on some NABI 147's heading in both directions

Some bus driver on Yahoo Groups once posted a portion of the destination sign code sheet. While I believe that part was for North Park, the one thing that would be consistent for the system is that the "via Yellow Line" and the like are programmed as public service signs, and are in addition to the normal destination sign (such as the MY KIND OF TOWN, CHICAGO IS or GO BEARS signs). I believe that that driver also explained how the driver can program the public service sign into the Clever Devices login. If the sign controller panel is still accessible, there is a button for entering that sign's code.

Having a Yellow Line sign is a bit weird, but it might be applicable to 54A and 97. I remember seeing a 147 also saying VIA PURPLE LINE, but that could have made sense, considering that the route ends at Howard.

Frozen signs have an effect on BusTracker. On Tuesday, before taking dad & mom to Resurrection Hospital, I was looking at #88 Higgins. Only two buses (both 6400 Novas) were being detected.

When out on the road on Higgins, I discovered the third bus. It was Optima 540 with a display sign frozen for #81 West Lawrence.

Having a 30-footer in service on #88 during weekday daylight hours is the most surprising aspect to service from Forest Glen.

There are many routes out of Forest Glen which only need 30-footers [#90N, #85A, #81W, #69, #64]. But I was surprised this one Optima was in service on #88 Higgins at the same time, and during weekday daylight hours, as two 40-foot Novas.

On weekends, 30-footers can fulfill schedules on routes which would not run them on weekdays, such as #68 NW Highway.

At least from what I have seen (obviously I just pass through the area and don't hang out there) weekends are when the Optimas are sitting in the yards. One would think it would be more efficient to use them then. Maybe things have changed recently.

anyone know why almost every NB 147 shows the destination as MICH/BALBO rather than Howard/RedLine? Did someone mess up?

Sounds like a server glitch from when those particular 147 buses made AM rush Balbo trips and the signs didn't update to NB destinations as they should.

If he was referring to the bus itself (not the BusTracker display), it would tend to indicate that the gps in the Clever Device didn't sense the end of the route (or the program for the route didn't tell the Clever Device that the end of the route was at the coordinate for Balbo and Michigan, which, based on the next paragraph, may be the more likely explanation).

There are times when you see that the headsign doesn't change, which is a bit of a pain on some Pace routes that have loops (such as 422 in Glenview, where two buses at the same stop have been seen flashing the Northbrook Court sign). However, since one can usually see the sign change at the same point in the Nortbrook Court parking lot, one assumes that it is under gps control. Similarly, at the other end of 147, the sign flips from Howard Red Line to Congress-Mich just as the bus starts after stopping at the stop sign at Rogers and Paulina, but before fully turning into the terminal.

At least your post indicates that Balbo was a valid destination southbound.

The strange thing was that despite seeing these sightings during the weekday, I also saw them on Saturday. I didn't think the 147 made rush trips on Saturday. The other strange thing was that these buses displayed the normal to CONGRESS/MICH on their SB trip. I wonder if their NB destination line got replaced by accident.

Edit: Today(Sunday) on my way downtown on the 147 I spotted all the NB buses displaying to MICH/BALBO which leads me to believe that their NB destinations on the system were changed. Both the new 4000s and the NABIs displayed it.

Tends to eliminate my gps hypothesis. However, you can usually assume that something that is consistently wrong is a programming error. However, it isn't associated with BusTracker, since that reflects that the north terminal is Paulina and Howard.

My experience with Pace on this type of issue indicates that the Clever Device is programmed with the wrong sign code.

Of course, there is the possibility that the CD is properly programmed, but the Luminator has the wrong sign for that code. What would tend to establish this is if no run is correct (as opposed to most runs being wrong but the occasional one being correct).
