Retired buses on road again?

A few days back I saw NABI #7556 on #50 Damen. What caught my eye was the front-end. It had the red stripes on the sides where the headlights and turn signals are, but the middle was plain white, no red stripe, logo, or bus number. What happened to this bus that required what seems like a replacement front-end panel?

Also today, I was on a EB #80 Irving Park bus and saw what looked like #6510 heading NB on #49 Western. Has this bus re-entered service again?

when did #6510 leave service? The only thing I ever heard of on this bus was that it had a rear left brake fire a few years back. It was at Madison/State. The fireman got to it quickly before any major damage occured. The bus was back in service within a month. BTW, did anyone catch Blago's press conference yesterday for Seniors riding free. They had a hybrid New Flyer up at the Harlem/Blue line station. Bus #809 to be exact, signed with #90 Harlem on the destination sign. I'm sure it was just for good press to put the bus up there, but if i knew the bus was going to be up there, i would've brought my camera and snapped a few shots. That would probably never happen again. Too bad they couldn't have sent the bus out for just one trip for us busfans.

I saw it on Channel 11. Of course, their version of the press conference was reporters not getting answers to their Rezko questions, so I'm sure it is not the type of event the governor planned (i.e. kiss me up for being so good to seniors).

This is the second time the hybrids were used for a press event, the first being for the Olympic Committee. Maybe the result would be different if any politician had the guts to show up at the 63/Ashland Green Line station, for instance.

Who said it didn't go out. If it were signed for Harlem, it probably did the route, for the day, anyway. If it wasn't operational, there are enough funny signs that could have been displayed for the event.

I doubt it went out with a run number of K998, a bus load of seniors and TV cameramen. Anyway what I saw can still be viewed on www.abc7chicago.com. Click on free rides for seniors. If you want to see it hurry up it will most likely be taken down soon.

Actually it is possible for the bus to have done some work on the route for the day. It could have been considered special event service for that particular run considering it was filled with a bunch of seniors and TV cameramen to mark the first day of the Free Rides for Seniors Program. Kedzie has been known use K98x or K99x as run numbers for trips that are not part of normal service on its regularly assigned bus routes or if its running extra special event service for a route that's not one of its own assigned routes. It has used run numbers in this range on some of the trips for the supplemental 12 Roosevelt service to Soldier Field for Bears home games during the football season or some other big event that has occurred at Soldier Field. Also when Kedzie used its NABIs to run 'L Shuttle' service during some of the early Red Line slow zone work last year, run numbers in this range were used. Kedzie also used these run number ranges for emergency bus service during unexpected events that may have adversely affected or delayed normal bus service on one of its routes.

Yeah I guess that Blagos big accomplishment!. His typical phoney, baloney politics, what a phoney! He is patting himself on the back for changing his tune on the very same people who voted for him. Dont get me wrong i think seniors deserve the free transportation, Im all for it. But in the manner in which Blago carries it out he is just playing his phoney, baloney politics. Thank goodness I didnt cast my vote for him!.

I was watching what what channel 2 had for the Blago event on their website yesterday. (www.cbs2chicago.com) It was actually kind of humerous to me. Blago is standing in front of #809 in the harlem bus bay and reporters keep asking him questions and somewhat nervously he waves them off and says "I got a bus to catch" boards the bus and takes off with his security detail behind the bus (Two state trooper detective cars). I know he just probably just went around in a circle up there and came back to the station. It just looked comical to me. I know the bus didn't go in service then. Imagine boarding the bus and you see Blago on it. You would be really tripped out. Anyway his security team wouldn't allow that most likely.
