What should we get ?

the newest VIIs in Toronto have been nightmares as of late. They've been so unreliable they're causing fleet shortages for the TTC.

Thats why Toronto TTC still got over 100 Fishbowls and they are rebuilding most of them again.

As for New Flyers, I think we have about enough of them.

I don't know much about ElDorado but I hear Gillig prefers not to bid on "big city" orders

[like NY, LA, Chicago?]. Does anyone know how well Gillig buses hold up?

Gene King

They actually do ok... if you CONSTANTLY stay on the maintenance. I am from St. Louis and the entire fleet are Gillig's. They have 30, 35, and 40 ft versions of the Phantom. They would only hold up at an agency that does well with keeping on maintenance.

I live in Minneapolis and where we have 99% gilligs. These busses do hold up very well. While Metro Transit does pretty much retire on a 12-14 year schedule, these busses are often sold into the private market, and you can find all sorts of private operators using retired MT equipment for YEARS after retirement. I have never seen a MT Gillig broken down on the side of the road here.

I think the New Flyers you all are getting now are a safe bet all the Articulated busses in the MT fleet and they are also very reliable and durable.

I don't fully grasp CTA's maint. program, but with MT's program, both these types of busses are very durable and reliable.

If CTA is looking for some Artics to hold them over until a new order, MT has 50 or so early 90's D60HF's just sitting in a yard waiting to be sold!

Also, I think CTA should stay FAR FAR FAR away from Van Hool busses. Besides buy American issues, we have a fleet of these at the University of MN. They are barely 3 months old and already having many problems, even with the reletively light U of M service.

What about DesignLine...weren't they talking to the CTA about purchasing a small fleet of them last year? Forget about Millennium Transit...R. I. P....El Dorado could be possibly be interested. They won that 300 plus order with the city of Phoenix in Nov, but unfortunately was resincded by them, recently , due to the bad ecomony.

I think they hold up pretty well. I've driven both models (Phantom and Advantage) before and can attest that there pretty good buses. In fact the Phantom is very ergonomically correct for the Operator if your not over 6 feet tall!! Don't knock on Gilligs till you drive one ;)

i think we should get Orion VI or gillig phantom
NEITHER OF WHICH IS MANUFACTURED ANY MORE. Also, the Orion VI was discontinued because it does not meet the standard bus spec. No, I'm wrong, the standard bus spec was developed because Toronto's VIs fell apart, and Toronto and NYC, in effect, told Orion to develop the VII.

Of course, this was a fantasy thread. However, that was a bad fantasy.

They demonstrated it here, but apparently CTA wasn't interested. As previously reported, it was NY MTA that bit on the small experimental fleet.

Of course, with the stimulus money now available.... (note the pacebus.com announcement that they are helping ElDo out). However, that doesn't stimulate Phoenix directly.
