Any truth to the rumor that ILDot redlined a number of New Flyers on Monday at Chicago Garage because of frame cracks.

Before any flies off the handle immaturely, I'm inclined to say rumor. We'd be hearing about it on the news by now. Remember the media got wind of it fairly quickly when the NABI artics were pulled because of frame issues.

It's possible, since Chicago's Flxibles were out last Saturday, so the New Flyers have needed more mechanical attention at Chicago lately. Our bus driver friends at Chicago garage that hate New Flyers should know what happened.

That does not point to whatever possible mechanical problems being frame issues. It could be something else. And the fact that as is pointed out by Busjack that the Chicago operators that absolutely hate Flyers who are on the forum were not on here screaming bloody murder is part of what makes me inclined to believe it's rumor and no one should go into a premature panic. I really don't believe cta5555 or T8H would really let it get this close to the following weekend without having even jumped on this even once if ILDOT redlined some Flyers of all models because a structure problem. I may disagree with them on some things but I respect how quickly they let their voices be heard if they have an opinion on something. They don't hold back on their views for close to a week if it can be helped.

Maybe they're too excited to even say anything?

I've never heard of this...

...though it's something to look into.

My best guess would be, if it were true that a particular New Flyer D40LF model were experiencing structural cracking or extreme stress...it would be the newest "lighter" built New Flyers. Meaning, the ISL series, 1630-2029. They are very light in weight, and when you go over a teeny-tiny pothole...it feels like the whole bus is going to come apart and break loose. There just not enough heavy duty steal to absorb some of the shock and stress of that impact.

On the plus side, from an operational stand point...they're the easiest buses to control & steer, hence it's lighter in weight, and the power steering is very good,...with the flick of a finger, you can make a complete turn. On the downside, if you hit a pot hole or dip in the pavement, and if you're at the right speed, the ATC comes on (assuming it stands for Automated Traction Control), followed by the resembling retarder-spit-sound that the 1930-2029 series make, the bus in the rear goes out of control momentarily and it fish tails (swinging/shifting side-to-side). My guess is if the bus were heavier, it would have a better traction.

I dont experience this in the ISM buses 1000-1429. It seems though, that the 1430-1629 series are MUCH heavier than the first series 1000-1429, since it takes ridiculously more force (from the operator) to control the bus, you have apply the brakes harder to stop...and its harder to steer and control the bus, the power steering doesn't seem to be aiding much in the steering..in my opinion..not sure if anyone else has experience this. When the ATC comes on, on these series, I dont experience the fish-tailing out of control action. The 1000-1429 series dont seem as heavy, and doesnt seem to take more effort to control them.

???
