andrethebusman
From time to time CTA got all eager to do short-turns. Remember alternate Halsted buses to Grand and alternate Broadway buses to Waveland? In fact, in the 1960's probably half the routes had at least a few short turns. Now there are very few, as because of long headways having turnbacks just makes the headways on the outer end unacceptably long.
andrethebusman
The last few years' picks have been the 2nd or 3rd week in June.2014 had a mid-late June Pick, but rail schedules were effective in May2013 had a June 23 and May 19 (to accommodate for 77th and 103). Rail schedule was out in May.2012 had a June 15 pick.2011 had a June 11 (Rail) and June 19 (bus). Bus summer and fall picks are based on when the public schools end and start. If the pick is late, after school quits a bunch of trippers are cancelled, but if fall pick is late, there is a need for a bunch of extra school trippers, which they try to avoid. ScheduleThere was a discussion here a couple of years ago over if the Krambles observation was correct that the costliest part to provide service was in the middle of a long route, why weren't routes short turned at both ends. They weren't then, but those such as 146 certainly are now.
andrethebusman
The ones to North Branch are going to midday storage at Division/Hickory facility. Desplaines/Polk has returned... This used to have midday Halsted storage in the 1950's!
BusHunter
I was noticing with this summer pick, last year in the weekday rush, they would run one #152 to Cumberland and all the pullouts/pullins, about every other bus would pullout/in from Harlem. This year I notice it seems to be every third bus coming from Cumberland two buses back to back pulling out from Harlem. (Doesn't seem to happen when pulling in, it's still every other) I can't wait to see what next year brings, will they hire a fleet of kangaroos to take us to Harlem or what?
