List of CTA off-street bus loops?

I should reply that seriously I did a Google search for "chicago transit authority" + bus + turnaround, and didn't find anything. However, it did indicate that the definition was unclear, as some hits indicated that the rapid transit terminals (Jefferson Park and 95th) were bus turnarounds. The Pace budget does have a list of Pace's.

One might assume that a line that doesn't loop the block has one, but there are some lines (like the east ends of Addison and Peterson) that just loop around a triangular island in the street. It is also more likely that a turnaround will be at the end of an old trolley bus route, such as 53, 54, 12, 65 (at Neva), 72 (at Naragansett), and 77 (previously mentioned), but not all currently live on (i.e. the turnaround Irving Park/Neenah probably isn't there anymore). Others, such as at Western-Berwyn, Western-79th, and Halsted-79th are from the trolley era. Some like at 55-St. Louis and Addison-Cumberland are pure bus turnarounds, as those were not Surface Lines routes.

It is also interesting to note that some surviving turnarounds do not serve their original routes. For instance, Belmont & Halsted was built for the 77 trolleybus, but now serves 134, 143, 151, 156, and 173. Similarly, in the late 1990s, 47th & Lake Park served 51, but now it more logically serves 47 and 28.

You lost me at "trolley bus route,"

Are you talking about the turn around , like at 79th and Western?

Actually, of those routes you listed, only the 151 and 156 use the Belmont & Halsted turnaround (though route 77 still does at night).

The 134 and 143 terminate at Belmont & Sheridan. During the AM rush, buses layover at North Avenue Beach. During the PM rush, buses hop on Lake Shore Drive to either return to downtown, or to pull in.

Route 173 terminates at Belmont & Sheridan, and then gets on Lake Shore Drive to either U of C or back to the garage.

It is also more likely that a turnaround will be at the end of an old trolley bus route, such as 53, 54, 12, 65 (at Neva

65 and 29 also had an old turn around at Navy Pier, down from Lake Point Tower, before the renovation of the Pier and current terminal there now. There also used to be one at the corner of Montrose and Naragansett for the 78. That is now a strip mall which was built after the 78 was extended to Read Center and now Harlem Ave.

Off street turn arounds that come to mind (at most from the north side. and in no particular order):

Milwaukee and Imlay, Diversey and Harlem, Cicero and Montrose, Cicero and 24th, Pulaski and Peterson, Addison and Cumberland, Belmont and Cumberland, North and Narragansett, Madison and Austin, Jackson and Austin, Central and Harrison, Grand and Nordica, Touhy and Overhill, Archer and Harlem, Chicago and Austin (formerly Mayfield), Division and Austin, Devon and Kedzie, Irving Park and Cumberland, Grand and Latrobe.

I guess the bottom line here is that there are still quite a few around !!!

Sorry...typing at the same time as NP

Is this new?  As of last year, the 173 terminated at the Belmont & Halsted loop, and Belmont & Sheridan was a stop on the southbound portion of the route.

{Edit} - Question withdrawn; I see the route has been restructured.

There was one at 94th & Cottage Grove, which Google Maps indicates still exists, even though it could not have had any use as a short turn since 4 was cut back from 115th to 95th when the Dan Ryan rapid transit opened. Was it used as the terminal between 1969 and the current routing to Chicago State Univ.?

Thanks for the info.

For the benefit of those who I might have confused with my initial question, I was referring to loop facilities where the bus turns off a public street onto a private CTA/Pace right-of-way.  A shopping mall or other property owned by another party that happens to have a bus stop or shelter would not qualify, as the bus facility would be incidental to the property's true non-transportation purpose.

I've always been fascinated by these facilities - it's like finding a little transit station in the middle of a neighborhood.  In my original hometown of Boston, most such loops are long gone, although a few are still in existence.  When I began traveling around on my own in the early 1980's, I was delighted to find a number of loops still in service on the RIPTA system in Providence and Pawtucket, RI.  Needless to say, discovering that Chicago still has many such loops has fired me up to plan a trip to your city, hopefully for next spring or summer.

Most of the ones we have aren't that exciting. Basically, just a loop for 2 buses to layover at the city's extremities, and maybe a locked washroom. Some, like Western-79, Halsted-79, or Devon-Kedzie have more activity, but that is because they serve several routes. The "multimodal terminals" at various rapid transit stations are more interesting; see the Trip Information and Best places to photograph threads.
