BusHunter Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 At last count we were down to 60 buses left. These are the five buses that are gone. You should all know that #5842, #5853 are gone since 1997. #5839 has also been gone for a few years. In the last few months two more have bit the dust they are #5849 and #5828. Quote

Buslover88 Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 #5800 has now been scrapped. It's the first retirement in the last 2-3 months, leaving 59 left. Wow, times are really changing. #5800 has been retired (it IS the first 5800 bus, right?). Before you know it, they'll all be gone. Quote
jajuan Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Was #5800 an 1994 model, not 1995? 1995. CTA got the 5800s starting in 1995. Quote
Busjack Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 Perhaps the question is whether it was an early prototype, although I doubt that it makes much difference. Quote
BusHunter Posted July 15, 2008 Author Report Posted July 15, 2008 1995. CTA got the 5800s starting in 1995. When the #5800's were delivered in 1995. #5800,#5801, #5864 and #5863 were all the last to be delivered. I read somewhere that they had something that was different about them maybe with the engine or something. I can't seem to put my finger on it. I forgot exactly what it was. They did sound different than the other #5800's. When they were all rehabbed though I think they just became ordinary like the rest of the #5800's. It's possible #5802 was the prototype. Quote

I know for sure that with 5863 and 5864 that was the case regarding the different engine. Not only were there engines different, but their exhaust pipes were different as well, similar to those of the Flx 6000s and the Cummins 5300s, 5745-5764. Quote
mbta9244 Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 So what's the latest? Are all 5800 series D40LF's now retired? Quote
Buslover88 Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 So what's the latest? Are all 5800 series D40LF's now retired? Not at all. They're still around. There's probably like 55 or 50 5800s left. Quote
jajuan Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 Not at all. They're still around. There's probably like 55 or 50 5800s left. Actually, it may be closer still to the 59 that were reported to be left as of July. Quote
greenstreet Posted September 13, 2008 Report Posted September 13, 2008 Not at all. They're still around. There's probably like 55 or 50 5800s left. I think these are the 42 that are still in service as of earlier this week: 5801, 5803, 5805-5808, 5812-5813, 5816-5820, 5823-5827, 5829-5831, 5833-5838, 5840-5841, 5843-5848, 5856-5859, 5861-5863 Quote
qwantae Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Its kinda sad that 5800s are now barely seen on weekends now just like 4400s and 5300s are not operating on weekends either. Quote
Buslover88 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Actually, it may be closer still to the 59 that were reported to be left as of July. Well, that was from two months ago, so that's why I brought the number down by a couple, and second, that's not an exact number I put, so really nobody knows. Quote

That may be, but given that no one had given an update until today, I stuck with the 59 last reported. Turns out we're both wrong, if that count of 42 happens to be the case. With the main focus having been retiring 4400s and 5300s, a no report on 5800s could easily have been taken as none retired. Quote
Buslover88 Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 That may be, but given that no one had given an update until today, I stuck with the 59 last reported. All I can say is, that's your right. Quote

I hope this isn't so because I love the sound of the Diesel Series 50 with the ZF-ECOMAT-HP-590 tranny on these D40LFs. It sounds much better than those 1000s with Cummins engines. As for TMCs I still want to ride the CTA's 4400s before they're gone, but seems time is running out. It also doesn't help that can only come on weekends. :( Quote

That leaves me at 50. I did just see #5822 a couple days ago. It could be still around. Quote

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'd like a sound/bus ride recording of one of these 5300 Flxs. I don't go upto Chicago enough to find and ride these. I'd like to hear these 5300s in action before theyre all gone. I can't believe there are only 26 of these buses left. At this rate, they'll be gone at least a week or two before the 1991 Flxibles are gone. I hope I get one of these buses the next time I have to ride #22 Clark, which will be on November 2. Quote
