^ I liked the ride I was able to get on one last time I was in town :) Do you or anyone know what the engines they have are? I thought I read here that it was a mix with some Cummins and some DD? I couldn't tell since the AC was on :D

Welcome aboard BTW.

They were good buses in their day, but there isn't much life left in the 6000 Series. Think New Looks around 1990. The 6000's are tired. I get to ride them on the 44 and many don't have working air conditioning. :( I will say that I'll miss them when their gone.

Just a few minutes ago I saw Flxible #6260 turning NB off of Milwaukee onto Central heading to FG with passengers aboard, the head sign was displaying #67 67/69/71 to Lakefront.

I rode that bus #6260 so many times on that route #67. LOL!!!!!!!!

Yesterday: I've spotted #6305 working #9 Ashland with a new paint and new logo on it, did they just recently repainted that bus and the only 6305s with Cummings with repaint????

I've been noticing a few strange #6000's on the #2 also. #6228 and #6158 were on there in this last week. Strangly enough there back at their original garages. The #2 also had #6472 back for a day between the transfer of it from FG to Archer. I also spotted #7632 on the #6. Could 77th be so short of buses they are running whatever shows up and is fixed at south shops? Since the O'hare shuttle they have lost 15 NF's, and are about 5 short in Nova buses.

Hmm. These are some interesting observations and you pose a very valid question.

The New Looks couldn't have been that bad in 1990! Were they? Here in Calgary, Alberta, we still have 115 GM New Looks built from 1977-1982. 15 of which are in fact 1977's and many are still great buses to drive!

Yesterday afternoon Rush, I did seen a 619_ on Wacker/ State working #2 Hyde Park Exp, did 77th or 103rd got some 6000s back?

It was probably a bus getting some work done at the South Shops that 77th just pressed into service for the day.

You wouldn't believe how Chicago's sometimes brutal winters used to to take its toll on some of the bus models that are now retired from service. The GM New Looks really were that bad in the early '90s. The MAN Articulateds were worse by the time 2000 came about. Their engines all started dying big time. The problem got so bad that in summer 2001, CTA had to move from using mostly MAN Artics on its 147 Outer Drive Express route to using mostly MAN Americanas on the route instead because most of the Artics died. That was the big reason they leased about 100 MAN Artics from Seattle until about 2005. Also under ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) all bus orders starting in 1991 had to be wheelchair accessible buses. Even if the New Looks had still been in good condition, ADA would have forced them out.

Also, if Calgary was anything like Toronto, the New Looks at the latter were continually rebuilt. As long as the frame was not broken, just given them another complete overhaul.

Buses seem to have a tipping point in Chicago, a jajuan notes. The 5300s and 4400s reached theirs several years ago, and the 6000s around now. Of course, I can only comment on appearance, not the engine internals, but it is probably the same (as Huberman is already grousing about maintenance time on the 2000-2002 Novas).

As both Busjack and jajaun mentioned they were in bad shape by the early '90's. The newest would have been 13 years old by that time any way.

  • 3 months later...

Does anyone know the number of the 6000 that was involved in the collision with a truck on Roosevelt at Western yesterday (10/29) and how much damage might have been done to it? I saw a news clip yesterday on Channel 7 stating that the bus operating the Roosevelt route and truck collided as the bus was pulling from its stop (presumably the WB stop given it was nearside) because the idiot truck driver attempted to make a right turn in front of the bus while it was still at the stop. So this was another case of yet another careless driver ignoring the sign on the rear of the bus stating making turns in front of the bus is illegal. Several people on the bus, including the driver, were injured though I didn't hear a mention of how bad.

I remember the first 6000 I ever spotted was #6019 in downtown on the #3 King Dr.

The first 6000 I rode was on #3 King Dr. I boarded at 95th and King northbound and asked the driver about the engine. It had a sound that was unlike that of the 5300s so I figured the engine wasn't from Detroit Diesel. Your sighting must be a little while ago because the 6000s haven't been at 77th for a while.
