All 15 of the Lake St 4900's were retired in May of 2005. Recent info shows that 6 have now been sold to a scrapper as follows:

4908,4909,4912 circa 4/08

4902,4903,4906 circa 11/08

4905 was converted to a command bus some years back.

That leases 8 that apparently have become work buses: 4900,4901,4904,4907,4910,4911,4913,4914

The work buses they apparently replaced include:

WB1 (9958)

WB2 (1602)

WB8 (9914)

WB9 (9893)

WB10 (9832)

All of above dragged away circa 12/08

Anybody ID which ones became which WB's?

Andre

What about this WB??? http://www.flickr.com/photos/zolk/53230646/sizes/o/ (I've seen it under the Lincoln/Addison underpass when the Brown Line was being worked on in my neighborhood). I was able to see 3 or the 4 original numbers on this bus... 996X... the last one was hard to decipher, but looked like a "3", "5", or "8".

There have been MANY WB5's - including three at Kedzie on the same day! Following 9800's were known to be work buses:

9800 scr 10/02 as WB3

9815 scr 9/04 as WB10

9832 scr 12/08 as WB10 2nd (was WB5 1st then WB4 then WB10 2nd)

9842 scr 8/04 as WB3 2nd

9893 scr 12/08 as WB9

9914 scr 12/08 as WB8

9958 scr 12/08 as WB1

9968 scr 12/08 as WB5 3rd (was training bus TC8 or BT8 for a while before becoming a locker)

9974 scr 12/04 as TC7 (or BT7) - this was a training bus

1602 scr 12/08 as WB2

1620 scr 9/04 as WB5 2nd

4323 scr 8/04 as WB6

Note there is no WB7. This MAY have been intended for 9974 which was BT7, but records do not show this. Also, there was an earlier series of WB's, though unlike the Flyers they were all unpowered:

WB1 ex BL1322 (8603)

WB2 ex BL1326 (8634)

WB3 ex BL1323 (8612) (possibly WB7?)

WB4 ex BW59 (334)

WB5 ex BW60 (307)

WB6 ex BW52 (3220)

WB7 unknown, maybe the BL1323 above?

WB8 ex BW63 (3447)

WB9 unknown, likely another short Flx?

WB10 ex BW56 (3442) (actually BW10!)

This sounds like the bus in the photo, but it never had a WB-5 marking on it when I saw it, just the faded original numbers 996X.

I remember talking to an ironworker who spotted me checking out the bus. He said they use them because they have a high concentration of lead in them, something like that...., he also said they have some M.A.N Articulateds as Work Buses as well. He seemed very nice, I wish I could've asked to board for a second just to see the interior of a D901A one more time... :(

Sometimes you do come across people who are willing to help out a busfan. Not often does this happen. Last year I met with undercover security at the Rockford Transit garage who asked me if I was boarding a bus. I told him "no", Im just looking at the buses. He didnt question me at all. I told him I was from Chicago out here visiting family and that I drive buses for Pace. He was really cool about it. He didnt even mind me snapping a couple of photos.

  • 2 weeks later...

I spotted three Flyer work buses near Clark Street Junction in 2004 and went to a nearby convenience store to get a disposable camera. While I was taking pictures, the crew foreman stopped me to ask what I was doing. I explained I was interested in the buses, and he unlocked of them for me and went back to work!

Andre,

Do you have original numbers for other New Look & Old Look work buses? I'm looking for BA135, BA183, BA194, BL1321, BL1325, BW44, and BW50.

  • 2 months later...

There is what appears to be a 4900 TMC at FG. It is parked in the north yard. Reason being it has a rear window.

Just to let you no Cathy had a mild heart attack on Thursday. She's in the Northeren Ill. Medical Hospital in Mc Henry County. She had to have 2 stents put in and is a candadite for open heart surgery. I talked to her again last night she sounded much better. She may go home on Monday so keep her in your prayers. Leonard

That 4900 has been parked at Forest Glen for a while now, its bus 4901.

I remember someone on this forum saying it was being used as a warming bus for drivers and was often sitting at the Halsted Orange Line station.

4901 is still at FG in the north parking lot as of last week. Is it still going to be a warming bus for next winter or is it used for storing tools?
