sw4400
I thought this would be a good idea for a fond farewell to one group of CTA's workhorses: the 1990-1991 Flxible Metros(5300's). If you have a camera that can link to your computer, take as many photos of these buses as possible and by the end of 2007, maybe we'll have a photo of each 5300-Series Bus that is still in active service today. You can post them at www.hopetunnel.org , or www.flickr.com . You can even give them to Zolk to put here, but I don't know if he'd want to put them on chicagobus.org, considering that there are over 400 of these buses on our streets. These buses do deserve a special tribute, though. Many of you have voiced your opinion on how these were good, strong, tough buses. And now is a chance to show your appreciation for their 15-16 years of non-rehabbed service. Flxible Metros(5300 Series)(1990-91-2006)
Buslover88
I think that is a good idea. I will take a lot of Pictures and give some to Hopetunnel.org. Happy New Year.
RIPTA42
You can post them at www.hopetunnel.org... Well, you can't exactly post them, but you could e-mail them to me if you want me to include them (though I'm so far behind in putting up my own pictures, I can't guarantee they'll be posted in a timely fashion). Also, since this is ChicagoBus.org, we should contribute more photos to Kevin's galleries. There's no reason (other than the time it takes Zolk to update the site) that this couldn't be the place on the web for CTA photos.
Buslover88
Well, you could E-mali Me too since I have a Website and i'll put them up.

The only concern I have, however, is bandwith(I think that's what they call it). 400+ bus photos added to Chicagobus.org could make it super slow or crash it altogether. We'll see what Zolk says about this, however... It's his site, he should know what it can handle...

I'm happy to take visitor submitted photos through comments [at] chicagobus [dot] org. However, I reserve the right to not use certain photos if the quality isn't to par with what currently is on the site.

RailBus63
Any estimate when the last 5300's will be pulled off the road? Jim
Buslover88
In about 2 Weeks or a Month from Now...Farewell 5300s Fixibles! P.S. I did'nt take Pictures because My Camera was full
Kevin
In about 2 Weeks or a Month from Now...Farewell 5300s Fixibles! Uhm, no. Delivery of the initial base order of New Flyer buses will begin sometime this month and continue through 2006. The Opus buses will also begin coming in later this year. However, these buses will not be enough to replace the entire 5300 series. The entire 5300 series will not be retired until at least mid-2007, provided CTA exercises additional options on the New Flyer order. RIPTA42
If they were retired tomorrow, there wouldn't be enough buses to make service.

Busjack
Frank Kruesi reported at the November 9, 2005 CTA Board meeting:Yesterday we introduced for media what will become the latest addition to the CTA fleet, the prototype for a new 40-foot, low-floor, air-conditioned and accessible New Flyer bus. We expect to begin taking delivery of these new buses in January of next year. ... When the delivery of the base order of 265 buses is completed by the end of next year... .CTA also indicated elsewhere that there are still about 426 (out of 470) 5300s still in the fleet. Also, the 6400s and 7500s were delievered at a rate of about 30 to 40 a month. While New Flyer may be quicker, you do the math.

Kevin
They are now Right, but it's not worth bringing up a 4 month old thread to point that out.

TMC-RTS-08
I still can't believe these 5300 Flxs outlasted the TMCs considering they weren't rehabbed! These buses won't die, the only way to kill a Flx is to retire it! Long live the hard-working 5300s!:)
