Visit to the Junkyard

One mystery is the New Flyers that appear to be on the chopping block so soon... 2-5 yr. old age spread, why are these buses, at least for the moment, retired? They aren't that old and should be repairable, even the appearantly badly damaged #1482. And what about #2021? I'm just hoping that it was just parked in amongst the junked/retired buses, and not retired itself, otherwise it saw very little life in service.

The buses in that area of the yard have been moved since that photo from google maps was taken. I did not see 2021 back there at all. I didnt even see those novas when I was physically in the yard 3 weeks earlier

#2021 is out on the #73 right now. (may interline with the #57 if your looking for it unless it is a pull in.) Also #1431 is on the #66, so it's still around for those wondering about it.

  • 2 weeks later...

what is a the junk yard was any thing scraped

Most of the actual scrapping is done at Sims Metal Management at 92nd and Ewing.

As I mentioned near the top of the thread, this thread refers to the yards in the 77th Barn/South Shops complex. The part adjacent to Perry Ave. is where CTA hauls dead buses to defuel them and prepare them to be towed away. However, in the case of litigation (and all the NABIs are in litigation, as well as 4058 that was in an accident) or something that is unusable before its FTA service life runs out, the buses just sit parked there. For instance, the 1996 vintage fuel cell buses sat there for about 6 or 8 years until they were finally hauled off.

Also, as previously mentioned, a number of NABIs are sitting behind the 103 garage.

You can use the search box to search for "Perry" or "Ewing" and get the posts regarding both.

Are the 1996 vintage fuel cell buses you are referring to the 5900s? If so, they are there in the same spot behind the new shopping store

Yep. So, I guess it is about 13 years now.

Are they the 3 with the weird roofs here on the Google map?

I wonder if it will be possible just to go and inspect the vehicle.

The linked solicitation indicates that there will be a prebid meeting at South Shops, presumably for that purpose. I suppose that they won't be checking for ID to see if you are from Chicago Bus & Truck or similar.

You could always register for the PDF for more information, and I have pointed out before that you don't have to give real identifying information (hint, computers is dumb).

If anyone is interested in repairing 1482 for the CTA, bids are now being accepted.

The CTA has repairs done either in-house at South Shops, Skokie Shops or outsources to Bus & Truck for repairs. Also they have a good relationship with New Flyer. Why do they have to put bids up to fix 1482? All the CTA should be able to do is order replacement parts from New Flyer for whatever components are damaged, and have one of the three areas mentioned perform the repair work, thus giving the in-house CTA Mechanics work or Mechanics up at Bus & Truck, as well as parts procurement personnel at New Flyer of America.

I may make the trip down there! How badly was the bus damaged that CTA would put it up for sale instead of fixing it?

You must have misread it, since the solicitation is for "Complete Turn-Key Restoration Collision Damage Repair for One (1) New Flyer Series1000 bus, Model D40LF (Bus No. 1482), as required, FOB Destination." [emphasis added]

As far as how bad, I suppose that you could download the pdf. Personally, I'm not that interested in this one.
