I noticed on sunday, Granville on the Red line is having Train tracker signs installed. The station house sign was done and the brackets were installed on the platform to hold the signs. I thought I read somewhere that the sign installation for train tracker at all the stops was postponed until next year. They did state before that the 7 Red line stations getting rehabs would get the signs first. So the question is, are the 7 stations only getting this and the rest later or will this just carry over to the whole system now versus next year?

The budget indicates various phases of the Train Tracker project, and also a project to have Train Tracker screens with advertising.

Maybe more interesting is that on page 63 (71 of the pdf), there is a project to use RFID technology to identify trains for Train Tracker. IIRC, wasn't it said that the train number had to be entered at the terminal? This seems different from that, as it talked about estimating times if the train was outside the range of a reader.

Since I'm keeping track of Train Tracker installations, I put up a list two posts above this one on what stations have trackers, what type they are, if an installation is pending or an installation has yet to happen. All stations are supposed to have Trackers by Labor Day. Weird some stations I've come across like Linden/Purple line and Montrose/Brown Line only have the tracker in the station house. I wonder if some stations are not going have a tracker on the platform?

Clark/Lake, Roosevelt Red, Roosevelt Orange/Green, Harold Washington Library State/Van Buren and Belmont Red/Brown/Purple are a few I can think of. All of them have the trackers that I think it was Titan that made them that have the product advertisements and news headlines that show in between the train arrival times and they're all located on the platforms except the Belmont one which has it in the station house and the auxiliary entrance that's across the street. The Belmont also has tracker on the platforms but they're large screens with no advertisements that show the time and date and are capable of showing times for up to 5 or 6 train arrivals. Oh yeah, Fullerton station also tracker set up the same as the Belmont station. And Sedwick, Chicago/Franklin and Ashland Green/Pink also have platform installed tracker which shows the arrival times of the next two arrivals for each of the two train lines at each station on the screens that show passengers the date and time.

Oops looks like you have the Clark/Lake, State/Van Buren, the two Roosevelt stations, Belmont and Fullterton stations already.

Sedgwick also has a new train tracker sign in the station house only. The platforms have the older LED signs, but they don't show Train Tracker info.

Thank you. That one I was admittedly iffy about on the platform signs. I think I was thinking more of Chicago/Franklin which I'm fairly sure I remember showing tracker info from the led sign.

Yeah, I forgot that those have the tracker on the scrolling signs. Polk/Pink had that too until recently. The contract was for a said amount of stations around the loop area. I'll have to look that up I guess.

Double check my initial thought about Sedwick because owine's post brings up the possibility that I may have been incorrect about that one. For some reason I have memories of that one having tracker info in the scrolling signs too.

CTA is supposed to be installing 50 signs like this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesbondsv/8004362683/ outside of stations (contract awarded in January) That's another thing i need to look up.

Snappy. Also cooler than the LED ones on the bus shelters. However, let's see how well it withstands vandalism.

They have smaller versions of these BusTracker screens on Halsted in Lakeview/Boystown halfway up the block from the 7Eleven at Roscoe. They're installed within those big gold posts that line the street at certain points.

They have signs like that in scattered locations across the city. There's one on Diversey between Sheridan and the next block west (I believe it's Pine Grove) in a shop facing the sidewalk that gives Bustracker info for the Clark/Diversey intersection. There's #22's, #76's and #36's on there. There's also one in a shop in Wicker Park they talk about on the internet. (you should be able to find that one by googling it)

I remember that was cited as one of the first applications of the Bus Tracker api, as opposed to an official sign. So, I don't have to Google it. :D

Main-Purple has a new TT sign in the station house only. Nothing on the platforms.

Is it just me, or are the station house signs almost useless?

Not if you have to decide to run up the stairs to catch a train just pulling out of Dempster.

Very valid point for the other lines as well. One would think that if you walk into the station house and pay your fare you want to know just how much hustle time you want to give yourself to get up that station's platform if you don't want to miss your train and be late for wherever you're headed. Relying on the "From loop" and "To loop" blinking signs on the lines running through downtown pretty much guarantees you will miss the train especially if you have the luck of getting stuck on an escalator behind someone moving slow with no visible mobility impediments and making a display of having all the time in the world by not at least walking with the motion of the escalator.

Yes, around the fare payment area most likely a customer is more concerned with paying their fare and is looking down, not up, and misses the sign unless they are a repeat user of the station. Some stations like the Linden station on the purple line has the sign off to the right on the wall in which a customer would have to find it. I'm kind of curious how a sign at the terminus can accurately give TT info. I almost missed a train there because the TT sign said I had 13 minutes left and it turned out the train was pulling out.

  • Train Tracker usually says that the terminal only shows the scheduled time. That usually applies only to true terminals, such as Linden or Howard (except Purple to or from Loop).
  • The sign essentially said you missed the train pulling out and the next one is in 13 minutes, again, probably based on the schedule, given that long of a headway.

Yeah but it should have said drpt. The train leaving was missing on the TT display.

I notice now someone changed the TT sign at Linden/Purple line to reflect the scheduled departures. The times have an asterisk next to them. So the info is not live anymore. Strange enough Foster/Purple line is the same way (not live) Also they seem to have put the TT info on the scrolling signs on the platform at Howard, but they seem to be frozen at red line trains in 3 and 7 minutes. I wonder do they plan to incorporate the TT info on the scrolling signs on the Brown line? Seems strange the Brown line stops all have the new TT signs in the mezzanine. (except Western, Belmont and Fullerton)

That was the case on the web version from the beginning.

Strange I didn't see the asterisk before. I think they put that in to let customers know that it's not live. Why would Foster/purple line not be live? It's not at the end of the line. South Blvd and Davis now are live. Just to show how inaccurate the signs were Linden said it was 5 minutes until the next train departure when in reality it was 10-12, and when we passed Foster it said 6 minutes. So those signs are basically worthless. At least I got to admire the scarecrows at Linden!! (They have that much of a bird problem?)
