1000-series D40LF - Updates & Retirements

Yesterday, I took a ride on 2019 on the 72, and the front doors did not want to open when the driver moves the handle to allow the doors to open. The air did release, but the doors stayed stuck until either the driver or another passenger pushed the doors so they can open. At Pulaski, we switched buses to 2009, and 2019 was sent to the garage for front door repair. This morning, 2019 was back in service on the 70.

As of today here's whats missing or went to SS last week without returning:

I'll check 1752 probably next week see if anything changed on it. - no visible changes

1666 and 1727 are still missing

1795 broke down again on Sunday but is fixed and sent on a SS block today (ended up breaking down before it's first LSD run). this is the third time it broke down in the last few weeks.

Here is what has been OOS since at least April 9nd that was not mentioned above.

North Park

1838 was last in service 4/2

1777 was last in service 4/4

Forest Glen

1633 was last in service 4/9

Kedzie

1875 was last in service 3/31

Chicago

1912 was sent to SS 4/14

2020 was sent to SS 4/16

Here is what was on this list but has since returned to service: 1631, 1660, 1701, 1736, 1769, 1788, 1822 (new shield), 1872, 1873, 1902, 1957.

Currently we're down to 696 #1000s left in revenue service, with the most recent retirement being #1752.  Forest Glen's Boneyard has become practically full at this point as they received 75 #1000s awaiting scrap. I believe once the final 126 #8350s enter service C, NP and K will retire the last remaining 3rd/4th option #1000s bringing the total down to 570 by the end of the year. I'll be shocked if any make it past the summer of next year but then again with more attention being paid to the budget shortfall they may get axed sooner rather than later.

Have you seen any of the ones I mentioned above (apart from 1752 which you mentioned) at the shops as well?

update: I saw 1873 at the south fence with its farebox and everything still there. I saw 1822 pulling out of SS on its way to NP. I saw 1660 down at the shops.

1676 is sent to SS nearly every day for some interesting reason but it always comes back. Kedzie also often sends 1758 to SS too with a successful return every day.

@andrethebusman99 said each garage has a run through SS to get supplies. Sounds like that.

There’s two runs to SS daily. Most times the buses come there and make a return, sometimes the same buses often during the week. Some buses (like 4204) were sent in the morning but are at SS for work to be done.

1781 has made a return to north park on the 22 after sitting in the boneyard for over a year.

That is not 1781. That is most likely one of the new novas that just entered service. 1781 sits on the south fence with multiple LTH stickers around it and a giant letter X in the rear.

This is what’s tracking as 1781

If I remember correctly, I think I tracked what appeared to be 1781, on the 22 Clark as a matter of fact while on the commute home one evening. Obviously it wasn't 1781 that showed up, based on your reporting it being in the boneyard and likely never to return to service, but an artic instead. If that's the case, I thought CTA would have gotten around to reprogramming the Clever Device unit already.

This is 4153’s first run in service this year, it was at SS since last fall. This is also the first time the number “1781” has tracked since 2023. They changed out the clever device in that bus and they never happened to correct the number which is why its tracking as 1781. Most buses are set up correctly, but last fall there was a bus tracking as “1854.” Also, 1781 sits on the south fence and is not in the boneyard awaiting its disposal.

One of 77th’s #1000s sits alongside a nova by the small white building entrance that's connected to south shop by the Vincennes entrance. Moral of the story, the bus has its headlights, marker lights and run number box illuminated. Ive been up and down Vincennes, the bus has been idle since Friday. Some driver either must have forgotten to turn the bus off or the bus was having electrical problems turning off.  Run is 7992

Also what else was missed was #1272 which is on LTH so basically retired.

I also noticed that 1642 is missing from the list, 1642 was retired in 2023 and for whoever works on Buswatch, add 1642 as retired as it says it's not retired on the list.

Almost forgot to reply back my apologies, #1272 should return some point in the future. As it has a much higher chance than its rusting sisters that sits in between it on the 79th fence.

That’s a low chance, 1368 has a giant X on the back but I wasn’t able to see what 1272 had due to the novas at 77th

#1272 should be returning sometime soon, it has no indications of retirement and it still reps a farebox so only time will tell when it will return.

This pic taken a few weeks ago shows 1272 does not have a farebox anymore.

last week I took this picture below showing the controls appear to be in the process of removal.
