Illinois DOT 4620 was operating on Amtrak Train 337 today. Operating without any backup power.

hmm interesting, this is an electric vehicle? Got to be a hybrid. :P

Here are the details on this engine. Why would idot purchase a vehicle destined for Amtrak a regional service? :P I thought Amtrak procurement runs at the federal level? Wouldn't it make better sense to buy for Metra?

Not anymore. The fed's philosophy the past 10 years or so has besn that if the states want regional service, other than in the Eastern  corridor, they have to coordinate it. Nippon Sharyo USA has a descfption how it worked with respect to regional rail high level cars. I didn't know about the locomotives, though.

Note that like the 1980s era Amtrak Pullman-Standard cars, the bellows are on the upper level.

There are several of them outside the Amtrak shop. I was there Tuesday and remember seeing 4611 and 4622, among others.

They claim on Wikipedia that 3 states will share 33 locos.

Had to zoom in on the destination sign. Glad they are in service now in the Chicago area. Hopefully they're off to a better start than the F59PHs.
