Archer Driver

Recommended Posts

I would think it possible you might still see some stuff at Chicago too. All that has been noted is that Chicago and Archer are swapping Flyers and Novas...nothing has ever been said about the Flxibles there being moved, and they certainly don't appear to be retiring. And unless Kedzie Flyers are headed to Chicago for a swap with Flxibles, there will probably be a few left there for a bit.

And one more thought on the consolidation. The only bus type that should be centralized where it would make sense would be the hybrids, since there really is a uniqueness to these buses. Any other type of bus should be relatively similar, enough to have a qualified mechanic make repairs without too much fanfare. This should be the same to a mechanic as it would be to a driver when it comes to learning the basics of your craft (learning the details of the specific bus).

All of #1000 buses should put the squeeze on #5300's at Chicago. All newer buses at a garage makes virtually a new fleet needing little if no repair creating more of those buses on the street. There wouldn't need to be that many spares for the rush hour, because everything is new. You could possibly retire the #5300 buses at Chicago without any new buses received. This could be why there is a consolidation at garages. If this is the case this is very smart. In time you could wipe out #5300's at Kedzie with a fleet of #1000's to replace TMC's, and If the #1000's delivery continues at 103rd you could squeeze out their #5300 buses. Now maybe I can see how #5800's might retire.

Now that the 103rd #6000's are at 74th, I wonder where Forest Glen's #6000's will end up? #6026 was on the #9 yesterday so a few of them has reached 74th, but with the 103rd transfers they pretty much fill the void left by TMC's exit from 74th.

Actually 6026 hasn't been a Forest Glen bus for about two or three years. It went to Kedzie and stayed until about last summer after which it was at 103rd and now within the past few weeks it has now been assigned to 74th.

Mention of this bus though has just reminded me that switching better condition buses for junk was happening before Huberman replaced Kruesi. 6026 in fact was a part of the big switch between Kedzie and Forest Glen in which Kedzie traded all its 6000s for Forest Glen's 5300s even though Forest Glen was set to get the last Novas at the time and Kedzie would not get any new buses until it got its 40 plus NABIs to replace the Americanas that were already gone and transferred to North Park for months. 6026 was a part of the small number of 6000s that transferred back to Kedzie to help fill the gap of the Americana transfer until Kedzie's NABIs started arriving.

#6026 at Kedzie and 103rd? Not since 3 track part 1 for Kedzie. Also tell me when you saw #6026 at 103rd because that has never happened. Let's review: #6000 - #6031 was at Kedzie before three track. Then AT three track #6000 - #6014 went to 103rd and #6015 - #6031 went to Forest Glen. (If you read very far back on this forum you'll hear about someone saying #6017 was on Stony Island) (I don't dispute this but toward the split of #6015 a few buses at first were at 103rd maybe up to #6017 or #6019, but never #6026) Anyway later in 2007 about May #6015 - #6021 went to 74th from the glen. So, up to now #6022 - #6069, #6103 - #6182 was at the glen. Wow you need BusTracker bad!! :P ( just a joke but it's the truth.)

Fo whatever it's worth, here's my $0.02 regarding series consolidation. Trainman, Busjack, Jajuan, and maybe a few others have expressed skepticism toward this plan. I'd like to add my voice to their chorus.

Even if short-term cost savings and efficiencies are achieved, this arrangement seems to me to be short-sighted and, possibly in the long run, penny-wise and pound-foolish. Here's why:

Once all the New Flyers have arrived, and the 4400s and 5300s have been retired, the oldest buses remaining will be the 5800s and 6000s, with 13 or 14 years of service. Ron Huberman himself has often stated that the older the bus, the more expensive it is to operate.

Wouldn't it then make sense to limit the use of the old buses to peak travel periods? That could easily be accomplished by redistributing them to the garages with the most rush-hour and school runs. (Every garage in the system except North Park has had Flxibles in recent years. I'd assume that North Park would keep its 5800s).

Instead, under this new plan, the oldest buses would be operated at all times (late evenings and weekends included), while much newer equipment would be idle. (Trainman mentioned, in an earlier post, that the quality of service in areas served by the oldest buses [presumably parts of the South and Southwest Sides dependent on 74th St.] could be at risk).

Over the next few years, the Novas would also begin to age, affecting service out of Forest Glen and Archer. Somehow it just doesn't seem wise to concentrate as large a series as the Novas out of only two barns. Here's an additional reason:

Travel patterns and service demands change from time to time. As a result the number of buses needed at any given garage may also change. For example, Forest Glen may at some time have a surplus of six buses, while Chicago Ave. and 74th St. need three buses each. Under the old arrangement, it'd be a problem with an easy solution: Send three Novas to Chicago and three Flxibles to 74th. Once the consolidation is complete, that flexibility is limited. (No pun intended). In hindsight, I think it would have made more sense to have kept the Novas as they were.

Regarding the (new) New Flyers, considering the size of the order, it would seem wise to distribute them throughout the system. Once delivery is complete, there'll be enough of them to provide most of the non-peak service throughout the city. So, assuming that they'd be the least costly buses to operate, why not do it?

THANK YOU!!! I couldn't understand why people were saying the 6000s were all gone from 103rd. I saw seven today!

From what I've seen on Halsted (#6002, #6102,#6093,#6091,#6012) 74th has #6000's in all different number sequences from 103rd. What numbers at 103rd? Please explain.

No, I understand that they're not in numerical order. But I have seen some left at 103rd. I wrote the numbers down. I'm trying to find the sheet right now. I'll find it soon.

They definitely weren't in numerical order before the final switch that's been reported to have occurred this past weekend. The 6000 that I spotted on 28 last Tuesday (1/22) was 6101.
