This is looking just west of Lake and Damen while heading northbound. I only had time to snap the one because the light changed green just as I was going to try another view. Took a little on the Green Line today but I had no room for any pics. The platforms are built and the frames for the canopies are built. The structure of the platform level station is in place. The basic structure for the pedestrian crossover and the elevators are also in place. At this rate, mud July seems like a reasonable expectation for this station to open. I couldn't see how rhe street level and escalators looked yet.

Carter, Jr. Really? Carter and the Board of Pastors don't have any higher priority? It wasn't like CTA was going to call it the "William Rockwell Wirtz Memorial Station," or something like that. 1

TaylorTank1229
Took this earlier this morning while heading west on the Green Line. Seems platform work is close to done, looks like they still need some time on completing work in the station-house. Best guess is to expect the station to officially open for business sometime between late-July to mid-August (unless delays occur and push it back some). Javi75
How come CTA made a Damen green line stop before making a Madison pink line stop? The pink line is the closest any L gets to the United Center distance wise. Would it have caused a ridership change on the pink line warranting more railcars for that line? My guess is that the city could not acquire the property around the Pink Line tracks. I suppose the property is more valuable to the owners as a parking lot. At the time, Douglas was running as a B WNW train, and Kruesi said there was $30 million left, so let's use it to rehab the Paulina Connector and put the Douglas trains on that, increasing service to Forest Park. There was some pushback to that, resulting in an O'Hare-54th train every 30 minutes. So the issues, 20 years later, are the ad hoc nature of the project and if CTA could have come up with he money for a station onlly serving the UC. Perhaps CTA felt that the cost to build a Punk Line station at Madison ( with land acquisition) wasn't worth it for 82 games ( 41 for the Bulls and 41 for the Blackhawks) and the Circus ( which no longer exists) and Disney on Ice. At least there are businesses and residences surrounding the Damen Green Line station that could use the station year round. At Madison, the high rise senior building could have used the UC station but more than likely would continue to use the 20 which stops right in front of the building. There is also the IMD Blue Line station that gets a decent amount of UC foot traffic.

I'm sure the MET had sufficient easements to build the original Madison Paulina station (and, by extension, its eventual successor, CTA). I'm sure there's a big difference in the landscape of the city when the MET and the Humboldt Park Line existed and today. CTA saw fit to close down the line and tear down the station despite its proximity to the old Chicago Stadium. Personally I have always been an advocate FOR THE UNITED CENTER station on the Pink Line. It would be interesting to hear from CTA why they didn't build it. Considering that the Advocate Center is built just east of the UC, the only barrier to the project would be acquiring the property around the Paulina Connector. It seems like Reinsdorf and Wirtz are asking a steep price for the property or aren't willing to part with it at all. One would think that team owners would love to have an L station dropping customers at their doorstep, especially a New Yorker like Reinsdorf. Apparently he is more interested in parking revenue. Remember there was no Pink Line service ( or any service) on the Paulina Connector when he bought the Bulls in the early 80s. You would remember better than me what the area was like before the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the riot that burned out the West side. That probably paved the way for the parking lots. I do remember the old Stadium was on the north side of Madison.

As I said, CTA has adequate property rights, unless it intends to massively expand its footprint. The chicago-l.org page describes various plans through 2012 to rebuild the station. The difference now is that Danny Wirtz and his development partners want the station, and the alderman wants the $7 Billion, no subsidy development. There was a recent press conference promoting a $7 billion United Center expansion. Early in the presser a train passed by and the speaker remarked " Wouldn't a train station look good right over there?" Obviously he was referring to a Pink Line station. So perhaps with this redevelopment which includes shopping, residences, and a 6,000 seat music hall. we will eventually get our Madison Pink Line station after all. In the meantime await the opening of the Damen Green Line station
