What Is Your Favorite Retired CTA Bus?

Do you care for the RED WHITE AND BLUE paint that is on the busses now .

I liked the Green ones like the FISHBOWEL type buses of the 1970`s

I thought that the New Looks were real buses, and while I sort of like the RTSes and Flxs, think the rest are tin cans, at least in appearance. Also, my preference was for the pine and lime, but the repaints like on the one shown at Busdrawings.com and similar to the design later used on buses acquired after 1979.

CHI74: Just messing with you, but did you mean Fish Bowel? I knew fish had guts, but ....

HANDS DOWN THE BEST RETIRED CTA BUS IS THE GMC 5307s!

They were such a fixture in Chicago for many years, it was the bus I grew up watching, the bus I spent the most time with riding with my dad and who could forget that tough sounding 8V71 Diesel.

I have 2 favorites, the Marmon-Herrington trolleys and the Flxible 3700/3800 series. Of course I haven't been a regular rider for a LONG time. I guess this is kinda obvious.....
When I lived near Devon for a year, I liked the 3800s, because they still looked new. However, if I remember correctly, weren't they about the only CTA buses with green fiberglass seats with no inserts?

I also remember riding on the MH trolleys (my last trip was on Irving Park), but by then they were too "old look" for my tastes. However, if one wanted to talk about buses of that era that were "distinctively CTA," those and the old look Twin Coach-Flxible propanes sure were.

I will say I liked the 8500 series new look Flxibles. I grew up near Diversey and Cicero, so I had a lifetime of those up and down Diversey for years and years. They looked real odd on North Ave routes when Keeler closed.

A close second would be the 100 series GMC's, basically the same as the 1000 series fishbowls without the a/c.

I remember growing up on Armitage ave. near Sheffield in Old Town. I always remember at the time Armitage ran GMCs 1330 to 1524 and Flxible New Looks 3700s, I even remember seeing #1148/1149 on Armitage as well as GMC Nos. 9306/9308, and one day I distinctively remember seeing the MAN Artic 7000s before they fully hit the street, Ill never forget it because at the time it was the most monstrous thing I had ever seen for an 8 yr old, 3400s also ran on Armitage. My dad always picked the 73 Armitage because it ran by our bldg. And I cant forget how many times I got to walk around the old North Ave. garage. All I remember seeing were GMC 5307s and Flxible new looks. The inside of the transportation bldg. resembled very much like Archer garage. I remember in later years the 1000s left North Ave. and were replaced with the 91/9500s at North Ave until it closed for good in 1986. At the time of closing, North Aves. fleet consisted of 91/9500s and the second batch of Flyers 9850-9929. I remember the 9100/9500s were sent to Kedzie and Lawndale while the fairly brand new Flyer D901s were all sent to FG. I grew up on board and around the GMC 5307s, that why theyre my favorite retired CTA bus, Hands Down!!! :)

I too was a fan of the 8500's, I rode the 152 Addison a lot during the 70's. I picked the 37/3800's as they were fairly new when I started riding regularly in February 1970. It was a great time to ride the CTA, I started school downtown the Monday after the Jefferson Park extension opened. I'd take a MH trolley on Belmont to Kimball, if I was lucky I'd catch a new 2200 series train for my trip downtown. I'd usually take the 151 Sheridan to Addison on the way home, I'd wait for a 37/3800 on the 151. Otherwise I'd have to ride an 8300 series Flxible propane, I much preferred the newer buses then.

I would have to say:

(1) MAN Americanas, particularly 4001, 4079, 4098, 4290

(2) GMC Fishbowls

(3) Flxible New Looks 3700s

Soon to be retired:

TMC RTS post-rehab would move into number 2 spot

Plus one. The fact that the TMCs have lasted as long as they have, with the little work that was done on them during their rehabs (yeah, they got AC units, big whoop) is a testament to both the RTS platform and how well the buses were put together.

Same with the Americanas. They'd probably still be running now if it weren't for ADA. My particular favorites: 4144, 4217 and 4290 as well :).

Close third are the soon-to-be-retired 5300 Flxs. I don't particularly care for fishbowls, though I prefer Flx New Looks over GMC New Looks.
